Brian, other than maybe the tie-down loop in front and/or the header, the add-on sump is usually the lowest point on the car. I'd think adding a skid plate would make the clearance problem worse.

I've done it once. Then I had my rear spring plates reindexed to give me an extra inch and a half. Now we know why all the Cal Look cars have that raked look. It is a functional road stance!
I've seen them being offered aftermarket for Bajas and the like and originally Things (or at least some I've seen) had them from the factory but, as Cory says, it will just make your clearance problem worse.
