I love the Oxblood color. I also like that that car looks like it just got done running a sprint and has just paused at the curb to catch its breath.

(Sidebar -- If anyone out there has any old Oxblood leather or naughahide, I'll pay good money for it. The older and more seasoned, the better. I want to make an engine cover out of it, but I don't want it to be new in appearance.)
But it's GOT to be around $40K. I keep hearing how I could have got an original for what I paid for my car.....

I'm with Lambros- $60K-80K, and it'll need twice that to be as nice as a $20K Vintage. Yeah, it's got a cool patina... It also has no top, and "the usual rust".

Drive it?!? Why would you? As Angela pointed out-- they are getting more valuable every day. Does anybody want to risk getting tagged in an original speedster? Even if you could avoid it, I can assure you that driving it would mean it would be getting "usually rustier".
I'm not disagreeing that the car's got that "sumphin' sumpthin'" goin' on.... I'm just sayin'-- actually DRIVING the car would be a bit like shoveling money into the fireplace. Even if Mrs. Bluehair doesn't rear end me, I could never escape the fact that rust never sleeps (except in California, and I don't live there). There's not a lot of tangible return on investment in keeping a rusty car parked in the garage.

Original speedsters have rounded the bend into legend. I can't drive, modify, or really enjoy a legend the way I can do all three with my entirely replaceable replica.

You want a really cool car with patina, and enough power to keep anybody entertained for any length of time? Paul has Butch on the auction block. Why would anybody want anything else?
I've got a buddy that retores vintage cars, Porsches, Lotus, etc... He has a 58 Lotus Elite, 58 Speedster, Lotus 7, and two 356 Coupes. He drives them on a fairly regular basis. Whenever he's out in one he'll stop by my restaurant so I can go out and drool. That said, he appreciates my replica and my situation, which is not having the resources and facilities to maintain an original. I've told him I could never own an original for fear something would happen to it and I couldn't live with myself knowing I was responsible for removing another part of history. Stan is right - They are essentially legends now.
21 minutes to go and still stuck at $65,100.

The argument shouldn't be wether the replicas are better for daily driving (they don't rust). The argument should be why people routinely pay $60-$90 for new cars that also rust.....and they don't even pay for it. They finance it. THAT is shoveling money into a fireplace!
I am as critical of people burning money as anyone, but that is because I have so little of it.....My toys are few and inexpensive, but it appears that there are many out there (and on this site) who have money to burn, it used to bother me, especially regarding our replica's, but I have learned differently from being a part of this SOC community, and I now say, more power to them.....
I wish I was one of them......
by the way, the real deal got to 72K without the reserve being met..
Well.... there's always "European Collectibles". They've got a couple of REALLY nice "A" speedsters (a '57 and a '58) both tucking in nicely at just under $150K. That's for 1600 cars-- not Carreras.

That's right-- a legend could be yours, for about the price of the really nice house I just sold here in small town USA (hoza' bout THEM apples, west coast guys). Perhaps you could get the guy down at the bank to loan you the money on a 15 year mortgage, if you put 20% down (just trade two of your Vintages or perhaps your new Corvette)... but only if you persuaded him that you plan to live in the car.

And it would be true-- you would be living in the car, or more realistically, UNDER the car (rust never sleeps, you know...).
