I am feeling peer pressure, albeit good peer pressure. Maybe Jim has a good idea; take two rides. Lane, I had my CSP Shifter put in today. I could not believe how short and deliberate the throws are. I did have trouble finding neutral at first because of the tight ratio. Totally awesome.

Cory, I'll have to hold you to it if I make the drive and end up stuck in Cookesville, TN or whatever they call it.

John,
I'm confused.
I somehow thought the plan was to leave the Talley Ho on Sat morning, go to Marysville to pick up US 129 and follow 129 to some point I was questioning. Then return to Townsend by reversing 129 or some other route ....for dinner in Townsend on Sat night. Sun morning we would repeat the 129 to Robbinsville and then take the Cherahola to Tellico Plains. From Tellico Plains everyone would take their own route home.
Please correct me!
ASAP, please.

Michael,
The plan for Saturday is to meet at the intersection of hwy. 321 and the entrance to the Foothills Parkway and follow that to hwy. 129 which leads to the Dragon. After we have completed the 11 miles and 318 curves, we would make a brief stop at Deals Gap, then proceed to lunch at the Tapoco Lodge. After lunch, follow hwy. 129 to hwy. 143 which becomes hwy. 165 when we cross back from NC to TN. We will drive the Cherohala Skyway, about 50 miles, to Tellico Plains. This is called "The Dragon Loop" on at least one website.

Those going back to Townsend have some choices about the route, but I would suggest hwy. 360 to hwy. 411 in Vonore and take that back to Maryville where you would pick up hwy. 321 back to Townsend. Sarah and I will not be participating in this part of the run since we have to get back home directly from Tellico Plains.

A Sunday run was not planned by me, but opportunities abound. I have other obligations on Sunday and will not be participating.

I hope that clears it up.
It takes us 8 hours to get home, so we'll be leaving on Sunday after breakfast and loading up.

We're planning on stopping at the big Farmer's Market in Ashville, right off of I40 on the way by, but that's about it, other than fuel somewhere in SC (it's 20 cents cheaper in SC than NC or TN) and a quick lunch.

Looks like Lane will be heading to Knoxville to order his new SAS Coupe (after seeing Charles's Creme Brulee again) so we'll be solo unless we get some Southast joiners.

Made it to Asheville, but I can't say it was without a hitch. The carbs, however, seem fine. While I was still in Charleston, making my way out, I found myself in the left lane of one of our very large expressway bridges (the Don Holt Bridge over the Cooper river). While climbing the 150' elevation, the car decided to simply, and without warning, stop. PANIC TIME!!! I was finally able to make my way over to the emergency lane with my remaining momentum. The emergency lane is somewhat narrower than my Speedster, and it's right next to the truck climbing lane, which makes for some interesting moments when trying to get out of the car. I call Hagerty for roadside assistance, and, while waiting for that, SCDOT shows up and blocks the lane next to me (whew!!!). With a little room between me and the traffic, I open the decklid and locate a wire that had come off of the coil - problem solved. I was seriously thinking I'd be showing up in a 4 year old Acura instead of a Speedster. I'm just glad it was nothing serious, but it happened at the worst possible place. It seems I have a glitch of some sort every time I drive to one of our gatherings.

No more drama from the car after that, but the weather between Columbia and Asheville was reminiscent of the Sunday drive from Carlisle this year. I am pleased to say that I have resolved the worst of my leaks, and I no longer have water coming over the top of the windshield - even without the famous blue tape. There are a couple of small leaks left, but nothing large.

The weather after Thursday is supposed to be gorgeous. See y'all Friday!
Just got the car back from builder Steve. I have had a hitch in the giddyup for a while and was down a bit on power. Steve checked for loose wiring, bad grounds, bad plugs, bad plug wires, bad fuel pump, bad fuel pump sock (a filter on the pickup), bad fuel filter (elsewhere), bad ECU all to no avail. When all seemed lost, he checked the air filter and found it caked with debris. Cleaned and replaced and presto, runs like new.

Guess what the first thing I am going to check next time I have a hiccup? Doh! It was not that long ago when I cleaned and re-oiled it, but I must have driven through a dusty area and contaminated it.

Looking to slay that Dragon! See ya'll soon.
Just had the Speedster wheels rotated and balanced---took a fair amount of weights which is odd because the car was driving so smoothly. Also had the front end alignment checked and it was perfectly within specs so I was happy about that.

Earlier in the week I "tightened" my top by removing the canvas from the bow and re-gluing it a bit snugger. I was a bit aggressive with the amount of material I removed where it goes over the front of the bow and down into the channel. Not much left to glue down. Re-glued it overnight with that green label cement and had to completely re--glue it with better stuff the next day. I used an "extra strength" 3-M aerosol product wnd it seems ok now. I am worried a little that it may "let go" at speed but tested it yesterday at 80 mph and it didn't budge. I also put in a center (almost) clip for better sealing. It seems that with 3 clips along the bow that the material is pretty much clamped down for an extra safety factor.

We are excited about seeing everyone at TOD. My wife, Alice is riding with me and my son Russ, who many of you met at Carlisle, is coming in a Bug Convertable with my grandson, Sean, so that will make it all the more enjoyable.

Our ETA is around 3pm Friday. Planning an early Sunday morning departure bcack to Hot Springs. Drive safely!!---Jack
Tom:

Hook up with Lane, but I'll probably be two hours behind you - don't expect to see Ashville until 2:30pm at the earliest, and Lane gave me a route to Townsend that looks like it goes right straight through the Smokey Mt. National park, west of Gatlinburg so we'll call Lane enroute with up-to-the-minute location updates....especially after we get lost in the wilderness.....
OK, it's close to 8pm and we're both feeling worse, not better. I certainly don't want to get up there and feel better during the trip, just to give whatever this is to the rest of the folks there.

NO ONE wants to get sick during a vacation trip, so we've decided to stay here, get better and contain the problem to ourselves and not spread it to any others.

Sorry, folks. We were both looking forward to seeing everyone...

Stop at a lot of the mountain overlooks, take lots of pictures and enjoy yourselves.

What Lane said, roger wilco. I hope that you and Kathy feel better before you reach the decision point. I think we are looking at a great weekend, weather wise, and a good showing for the folks who are into the 356/550 replica lore. "Hear me" as Charlton Heston said in at least one of his movies, this is going to be a great weekend. And no, I'm going to give up my miscreant ways and obey the speed limit; you can take that to the bank.
Hoss
ps. the Tubaru is runnin' great!
Fabulous weekend, incredible weather, great fall color, and not ONE cop anywhere to be found. As I write this Marty & his bride are still en route to Chicago. I am so thrilled that we had cars from Arkansas (Jack), Chicago (Marty), Charles and his wife in the "first Tubaru" coupe, the boys from Indiana (our friends in the original '58 speedie) with.........count 'em, 519,000 miles on this baby !!

Thanks to Hoss for scheduling the weather, no Barnie's and a great route. And thanks to returning Guests Lane, Leon and Margaret, returning to this event. Gordon and Cory we'll see next year !

Many, many pictures to soon share. We need to get the PA crowd involved. Glad you guys had good weather.............but we had the altitude, and the fall color. Besides I'm sure the beer was colder in the Smokies !

Second that, Tom---truly fabulous time in the Smokies! Sensational plan for the day too. My grandson was thrilled more than I can tell you and couldn't get over the "Tree of Shame". Russ wants a Spyder so maybe he'll sell his 3-4 914's and 2-3 bugs and put one together!

Friends, food and fun--great combination and just a sensational day in the Smokies.

Alice and I left Townsend, TN for Hot Springs, AR this morning at 7:00
and rolled intoour driveway 9 1/2 hours later. The Speedie ran great--averaged 27 mpg and ran 70 all the way home. Zero problems with thecar--totally flawless drive all the way home.

Great to see some old friends from Carlisle and new ones for this year's Tail of The Dragon.

I'll post some pix asap.

Thanks to all for a wonderful time!---Jack
I'm so glad all Y'all had such a great time. We're both sorry we were cooped up here in Beaufort all weekend....

Believe it or not, the entire East Coast, from the Mississipi to the Atlantic and Florida to Maine, had terrific weather this past weekend, EXCEPT FOR BEAUFORT, SC!!!!

We've had some sort of stationary storm sitting right over our house since Friday morning and it's been raining for three days!!!!!!!!! If you go about 1 hour inland it clears right up and is great, but NOT HERE!!

I finally started feeling better around lunch time on Saturday and then quickly got bored and disgusted at missing such a great weekend, so I decided to re-work my workshop with salvaged kitchen cabinets, new bench tops (looking suspiciously like salvaged, solid wood doors cut to size), Peg Board background, under cupboard lighting and just finished the second coat of "covers any dark color" primer to go from dark Cherry or "Fruitwood" (whatever the heck THAT is) to something more workshop-like (Gray? Silver? Belize Coral? Honey-Beige? We'll see.....Whatever they have El Cheapo in the Lowe's paint clearance bin - this is a low budget make-over.)

This'll also take my mind away from the financial melt-down making my retirement income engine look like a Briggs and Stratton....

Here's my in-process shot in white primer>>>

Hi guys & gals,

We left Tellico Plains as the group was breaking up and made it to Corbin Ky to spend the night. Got back to Indpls about 2:30 this afternoon. I don't know how many of you knew it, but after arriving near Maryville earlier than expected on Friday, we decided to go ahead and run US 129 down to Robbinsville and then reverse the route back to end in Townsend. [With my name, it was a natural.] I drove down and my cohort [Bud Bowlby] drove back. It had been 25 or 30 yrs since I'd been on the road and Bud's first. It was certainly the drive of the year for both of us.

In driving w/ the group on Sat, I'd occasionally drop back and then power through tight turns to close on Arkansas Speedie. Sometimes I'd kick it too soon and nearly climb Speedie's rear. When we got to Deals Gap I apologized for any additional gray hair I gave him.

We have a saying in the Porsche club that "it isn't the cars, it's the people". I'd say that the phrase fits you "repro" people as well. We enjoyed meeting all of you and look forward to another adventure with you in the not too distant future. Whoever has the "in" with the weather gods, thanks for a great job. You did good.

I got so excited about the whole weekend that I'm thinking of setting up the trip for a 356 club we have that covers Indpls, Louisville, Cincinnati, Dayton and all points between.

Best wishes to all and "stay between the green".

We made it home about 9:00 PM with only a warning ticket from a local cop who thought I looked like a criminal he recognized. I assured him that I was not a criminal and we just got back from a Porsche event. I just did not have the energy to stop at that red light. My legs were numb and vibrating & Sandy was turning a lovely shade of pale green so I think the cop got it.

Almost forgot, we took a wrong turn down deliverance lane and got a roadblock from 6 or 7 wild turkeys. These guys were tough, Sandy had to get out with the Mexican blanket to bull charge them out of the road, Turkey's 1 Sandy 0. After several failed attempts Sandy got back in the car. We got tired of the entertainment; these Turkeys obviously never saw a Speedster before and just would not budge. I tried to run them over in frustration, but they are wise, and got out of the way before we could have an early Thanksgiving diner.

Many thanks to the organizers and to all who attended and made this a great event.

Marty and Sandy
Just got in.....Great fun in the Smokies.....Have footage of a piece of road I call the corkscrew.....A section of Fed Hwy. 441 that actualy makes a turn of more than 360 deg. I'll post the video as soon as I figure out how to do it.....I just want to know how it can get any better than this trip without free beer.....

As Jim I. would say...." I'm just sayin."
I'm not home yet (that comes tomorrow) so I haven't posted any of the approx. 100 pictures I took. No matter, it was a spectacular week for me. The car has run better than ever before - I guess that carb teardown did the trick - and the weather, other than last Wednesday, has been absolutely perfect. Let's see if I can count the wonderful drives:
0. Wednesday - Charleston to Asheville in the rain, reminding me of the drive home from Carlisle. Glad to see I fixed the windshield header leak. This one is numbered "0" because it doesn't qualify as a "wonderful drive".
1. Friday - Asheville to Townsend with Tom R. on the Foothills Parkway and through Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Spectacular scenery.
2. Saturday - Foothills Parkway to the Dragon(129), the Dragon itself (without police presence), the Cherohola Skyway, and back to Townsend - what a day!
3. Sunday - Foothills Parkway up and back with Leon and Margaret.
4. Sunday - Nice secondary highway (321) drive to Casa de Hoss in Tellico Village - what a beautiful community and what wonderful hospitality from John, Sarah, and the irrepresible little Zoey.
5. Monday - Nice drive over to SAS - Nolan, I have some pics for you.
6. Monday - I-40 from Knoxville to Asheville through the mountains. It's a hoot going 70 through some of those curves.

Tomorrow I have the rather boring drive on I-26 back to Charleston. This trip has convinced me even more that we reeeeeeeally need to move to the mountains. I'll get some pics on Photobucket when I get home.
