Hey! News Flash!!
Kathy and I are already close - we're staying in Waynesville, NC with friends, and will (hopefully) hook up with Lane as he hurtles Northwest on I26/I40 towards Knoxville/Townsend on Friday.
Stopped for gas and a burger somewhere along the way, and looked out at the car to see some guy taking a slew of pictures of Pearl with his camera/phone. Geeesh!!
Second Flash! Wife Kathy will be making the run with us, riding shotgun and watching out for the Gendarmes. Guess she couldn't find enough Quilts to hunt in the immediate area, plus she didn't realize that this was an ALL DAY event !>)
Got here (so far) without incident and are now hiding the Speedster deep in the Great Smokie Mountains National Park, way the heck up on a mountain - shoulda seen me making the last 1/2 mile on a dirt road hauling the car/trailer!!!
Looking forward to seeing Y'all on Friday!!
C'Mon, Cory!!!! Git R Dun!!!!
gn and kn
Just talked to Cory and he wanted me to let y'all know he's packed and ready, and the Hoopty is 100%. WOO-freakin'-HOO!!!!!!!!! See y'all on Friday.
Hey Gordon, I hope to be at the junction of I-26 and I-40 (in Asheville) somewhere around lunchtime. Maybe we could meet for a quick bite before heading on.

Has anybody heard from Cory? Did he make it to the tri-cities area OK? I think he was due in last night.

Ps. If you arrive in Townsend early, check out Wood-n-strings, a music shop that specializes in hand-crafted dulcimers. You may not be into dulcimers, but this shop is truly fascinating. Owners Mike and Connie Clemmer are really nice and interesting people. Tell them John, the guy with the wormy chestnut dulcimer with Donald Duck on the scroll head, sent you. They'll remember....;-)

Like a good catholic, I had to pull out at the last minute. I neglected to renew my plates this summer since I have not been driving it and I got pinched coming home from work on thursday evening. Then to make matters worse... I woke up to a flat tire on the rear passenger tire. I could not get the plates renewed and get the tire fixed and still put in a full day at work before taking off Friday afternoon. Hope it was a great time and can't wait to see the picts!
It's always a little sad that great events come and go so quickly. After the planning and anticipation it is gone in a flash. Carlisle is kind of like that....a great time but too quickly it's over. We had a great drive together and just about perfect weather, although we had to be at the highest elevations to see any color. What was there was a little but muted, but still splendid.
I want to thank Tom for organizing this event that was almost perfect, save for one minor glitch. The Hoss man was ticketed for speeding on the Tail of the dragon; I will find out Monday what my options are and what the damages are likely to be. Maybe go to court and plead my case, go to driving school to prevent having a mark on my clean record or just pay up and shut up. Opinions are solicited.
Anyhow, here are a few shots from the event.

Great shots Hoss! Thanks for passing them along. Look forward to more...looks like a glorious day!
It was beyond glorious!!! The weather could not have been better, and the scenery was awe inspiring! It was fun to watch the faces of the motorcyles folks when we pulled into the place at Deal's Gap. Priceless! We covered something around 200 miles in absolutely perfect conditions. What a day. Now we need to shoot for something on the coast in March. All you folks in the southeast make some time available in late March to come to the Charleston area. Gordon and I will work on some activities.
I'm still away from home (in Asheville) but will post some pictures tomorrow.
Tom and Hoss: Thank you so much for putting together a wonderful event!
Leon and Tom: That fellow taking pictures at the turnout where we waited for Hoss and Lou sent me an email with some nice shots of everybody's cars. I forwarded it to everyone but y'all as I don't have your email addresses. Email me at laneanderson2003 AT yahoo.com and I'll send the pictures on to you.

Beautiful weather, great scenery, cool cars, interesting roadway, fun folks - how can it get any better than THAT (while keeping your clothes on)!!
Looks like y'all had a great time, wish I were there! Thanks for sharing those pics.

300 plus images from our ride. I will post my selects by email to anyone who wants to see, so I can send larger files. Hopefully will have something out by tomorrow. Thanx to all for coming.
Wondering how many new Barbie doll heads Cory will have in the Hoopty by the time he gets home !!

I, too, have yet to find my camera from the trip flotsam and jetsum, but will have something to show tomorrow (drove all day, and just too tired to unpack the truck!)
We stopped at Deals Gap, on the route, where there must have been over 300 motorcycles either waiting to go on the Dragon or just finished, coming from the opposite end as we did - lots of Cafe racers, hundreds of Harleys, all with suitable "Biker" people. We caused quite a stir, had many come to our end of the parking lot (dusty dirt strip) to take a look and MANY waved, smiled and took pictures as we left - made us feel like celebrities!! Seems like we were the talk of Deal's Gap for the rest of the day!
The turns of the Dragon have to be seen and felt to be believed, while the Charohala Skyway had some of the coolest scenic vistas in all of the Great Smokie Mountains. Then we came down out of the mountains and drove back about 65 miles on some of the nicest, twistiest back roads to get back to the hotel. THAT was almost as cool as doing the Dragon!!!! I have a picture I'll post tomorrow of the "look-ahead" from my GPS that is just a snakey bunch of turns, as far as the GPS looked. Amazing!!
You folks have NO IDEA how cool this ride was. I only wish we had ten times more Speedsters and Spyders there than we had. There are thousands of Bikers there almost daily, but they would often wave as we roared past and would always come over to see the cars and talk when we stopped. They look gnarley, but they're cool folks - even met one guy who had a Gene Berg shifter on his VW-powered Trike!!
As I've always said: "One Speedster or Spyder going somewhere is just a cute little car going somewhere, but more than two going somewhere is an event".
We had us one hell of an EVENT!!

Congrats to all who rode and carried the flag, so to speak. Sorry I could not get coordinated enough to get this one done. FWIW: I had some of the same glorious weather in the mtns around Santa Fe, but sad to say, not taking those twisties in a Speedster. My son owns a mini-van . . . what can I say? Congrats to Cory also for showing how it is done: apply the Nike method and Just Do It. Will be staying tuned to see some more pix posted up. You guys rocked, obviously.

Thanks for making this event happen.....It was my first, but won't be my last......Great ride with a "fun with Cory and Lane" action trearment......
Sorry Lane, I couldn't resist....I owe you a drink...want to collect at Carlisle?? Keep me posted....

What a GREAT time. I was a little worried about whether or not the Sloppy Jalopy's exhaust was tight enough at the start of the trip, but I think the car is running better than it ever has before.
If this is going to become an annual event, I'd encourage any and all to try to make it. Tom took some brilliant action shots -- maybe he can be convinced to put the best one he got of each car up here? And Tom, there aren't many people out there with your sense of style and grace. Thanks for the indulgences of time, both with your friend Mark and on account of my ... delay. She was a ball of fire.
Hoss, my good man, every time we get together I'm reminded of the Good Old Days, when people were honest, times were as good as you made them and friends welcomed you with glass of whatever at the end of a journey. If you're ever in Charm City, please look me up.
Gordon, with his usual unflappability, was Mr. Spock throughout, but I think there are a couple photos with the SEG in Tom's camera. Kathy is a delight, and Gordon's a lucky man. Pearl, naturally, was the hit of the parade with the bikers.
Lane was Mr. Enthusiasm -- kind of like watching a kid (albeit 50-something) in a go-kart on the grown-up track. It's possible he had the most fun of any of us. I'm sorry we couldn't sort out that shifter hitch for you.
Leon, great to finally meet you. Your car is fantastic. I've decided to ratchet back my ransom demands to Carey after looking at how beautiful simple can be. And you, Sir, are the perfect Southern Gentleman. I owe you a pair of gloves.
Lou was exactly who he said he was. For those of you who haven't heard of this guy, he showed up for the run itself, driving everybody's cars and wearing a shirt with his name and a 911 on the front and INSTRUCTOR down the sleeve. (Thankfully, he only commented on my brakes.) Please pass a thanks to him for the advice. I'll revert to drums or something ... ;)
And finally, being here in St. Louis with the folks for a few days will give me a chance to hang out with the 'rents and maybe see a man about some seats.
We'll be checking back for some photos form the Mom's laptop today and tomorrow ... I didn't take a single one.

Cory.....the man ain't got no technology...
He lost his phone charger somewhere in Virginia, then left the batteries for his camera back in his Motel room, so he's dependant upon the rest of us for pictures - look close, I'm sure you'll see him and the S-J prominently positioned.
These are a bit out of sequence, but you'll get the idea. The turns on the Dragon are definitely NOT flat. They are nicely banked, and then you either go abruptly up or down. A couple (according to the tee-shirt I bought) are 180's one way, then another 180 the other way but may turn upward when exiting. It is VERY heavily forested there, and there are almost zero guard rails, with cliff-like dropoffs (although not as radical as the Alps or roads in South America, for the back woods of Tennessee they're dramatic).
Here's the group of cars at one of the overlooks. Nice lineup, isn't it?
http://s49.photobucket.com/albums/f254/speedster356/?action=view¤t=TheLineup.jpg
Unfortunately, they're too short, and the wall is too high, to see the scenery behind, but this is what the Great Smokie Mountain National Forest is all about:
http://s49.photobucket.com/albums/f254/speedster356/?action=view¤t=SmokieVista.jpg
I'll have a few more "action Shots" as soon as I can get the pics on Kathy's camera uploaded. I peeked at them at a rest stop yesterday and some of them are great. Stay tuned.
When we got to Deal's Gap, we finally saw all of the crashed motorcycle parts on the "Tree of Shame". They were stuck on the tree up to about 30 feet, and many of them were inscribed by the (ex) rider who crashed with them:
http://s49.photobucket.com/albums/f254/speedster356/?action=view¤t=TreeofShame.jpg
This is the beautiful Tapoco Lodge, in the heart of ride, where we stopped for lunch. They put people up overnight, too.....what a beautiful stop, and right on the edge of a river to lull you to sleep:
http://s49.photobucket.com/albums/f254/speedster356/?action=view¤t=TapocoLodge.jpg
The colors were just starting to turn up there, and there was a lot of talk about it being so dry that the leaves might just turn brown and fall off, but the colors are really trying to pop out - another week or so and it should be much brighter:
http://s49.photobucket.com/albums/f254/speedster356/?action=view¤t=SmokieColors.jpg
We stopped at a Scenic Vista towards the end of the run and this REALLY BIG Biker guy with "101'st Air Cav" tattoo'd on his hand looks into my car, hits his friend and says "Hey, look! He's got the same shifter as me!" so I wandered over to see what's up, and how he used a Berg Shifter on a motorcycle. Surprise! Here is is Trike:
http://s49.photobucket.com/albums/f254/speedster356/?action=view¤t=TheTrike.jpg
We saw another trike which parked near to us at Deal's Gap. The guy backs into a parking space as we notice that he's got a wheel chair strapped to the top of the trike, then I noticed that he's lost a leg and in the space where his foot would have sat he's welded a tool box onto the footspace. He got off, whipped the wheelchair to the ground (as it popped open - it had been collapsed) and then wheeled on over to see our cars. Nothing keeps THAT guy down!

All in all......one hell of a great weekend. Lost a little power above 4500 feet, but still ran strong. Cory's engine loaded up a little in the moountains, but the run back to the Hotel seemed to clean it out a lot, and it sounds like he made it to St. Louis OK - we were worried, but he had half of Sartwell's shop in his toolbox to comfort him. No one had any troubles for the entire weekend (but we watched Cory pull and clean all of his Idle jets in in about 10 minutes at a stop!!)
Everyone was great company and a lot of fun to ride with. Kathy and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire weekend (and that's saying a lot for ANY right-seater to endure all of those turns for a whole day - she had a ball!)
My sincere thanks to Tom for getting us all to go and to John for setting up the route and being tour leader, even though it's not always best to be the point man |>(

It took Hoss a little less than three days to get to Tah-nah-sea (Knoxville-ish) from LA a couple of years back. My guess is figure on three 10-12 hour days and you're there.....
On the other hand, there MUST be some terrific rides like this out in the Rockies and you could get there in, what.. 1-1/2 days, tops ???
You can always go back and pick up your tired butt somewhere along the trip on the way back ;>)
I'll tell ya, though, after driving a full day to get there, driving all day on the tour and then another 7-1/2 hrs to get home, I don't want to drive anywhere for a few days!!!! Just want to sit on the deck and watch the tides come and go...

C'mon, Gordon, I did the roughly same amount of driving (1,057.25 miles) and it was ALL in the Speedy ;-)
Here's a link to a small album in Photobucket. Theron would ban me if I uploaded them all ;-) For some reason the photobucket bulk uploader put them in reverse order. Go figure. Best viewed as slideshow.

There's always next year, Angela. This might become an annual event.
Vince would have liked Deal's Gap...
His kinda place.
Watched as a couple took off for the Dragon on a VERY stout Rice Burner Cafe Racer. Had similar look-alike "His and Hers" helmets on - both had neon Mohawks on the outside of the helmets.....Reminded me of that little Martian on a Bugs Bunney cartoon.
TONS of Harleys there, in fact, there were a lot of Harleys just about every place we stopped. Too cool out for interesting Summer dress - everyone pretty much kept their leathers/scarves/vests on. Bummer.....
I walked in to the "gift" shop in my Walt Disney World windbreaker (hey, I like Disney World) and got a few side looks (as I was surrounded by black leather bikers), but then someone asked "You da guy wid dat white Porsh?" When I said yes, and they all seemed to know that we'd just come in from the Run, several came over and asked what it was like to hit the corners hard in the car.
"Can't take the corners that hard on the Hog with the old lady on back - she pounds on me to slow down..." someone said.
I had to tell him that really sucks....then I told him that my wife doesn't pound on me....just says "SERIOUSLY.....SLOW DOWN!"
"Yeah, I know..." he replied, giving me a knowing look....
