Fall southeast mountain gathering

I think it's a virtual certainty that we will attend but probably driving the Mustang.  Sarah is not a fan of the Red Man.  

Understood.  I will probably invite a couple of my friends from Cars & Coffee.  Some of them have some interesting rides.

You will be very close to this.  I have ridden these roads on bikes many times.

There is a town named Helen GA which looks like a little town in the Bavarian Alps.  Its a trip.

Yeah, Helen was mentioned as somewhere that we should visit on this trip.

I haven't been actively pushing, but I like the fact that the Eurofest is taking place in Spartanburg, SC on the 17/18 weekend.  Hmmm...

 

I'll start pushing on it this weekend.  Right now I think I'm going nighty-night.

It would be about a fifteen hour drive for us from up here, but we might consider making the trip.

Ok folks, I'm game for making this the centerpiece of the weekend, but it would probably move the venue from north GA to western NC or northwest SC.  To those who have expressed interest previously, who does this look to you?

Mid-october.  The Euro Auto Fest is Oct 17-18.

Depends on venue & program.  We are still interested, We'd even go back to the original T.O.D. event.

I am certain that Sarah would not be interested in "just another car gathering" even if it is sensational.  If the change in venue takes place I'll have to do it solo....again

Well, if the dates work out, we could combine a trip to the Outer Banks with a gathering more inland somewhere.  We missed going to the OBX this Spring, and it might be nice to see what's it's like down there in the Autumn.

 

It's a two day drive for us to head down there, so a day or so drive inland wouldn't be much of an issue.  It's something we have wanted to do before, but now we have the time.

I live an hour from the outer banks.  My wife and I spend a week there every year late Sept or early Oct.  We will be there week of Sept 27.  Still warm enough for the beach.  Rentals are 1/2 the price.  Great prices at the outlets.  No lines at restaurants.  No traffic.  Empty beach.  Its awesome.

I'd definitely go to the Outer Banks for our event.  Great bargains there on accomodations too.

We always stay at the Seafoam Motel - a 1950s type of place right on the beach.

We don't stay there for the price; we stay for the nostalgia.  You can't beat a lime green motel...

 

 

 

Heck, if y'all want the beach, what about Charleston.  Not only has Conde Nast Traveler named it the best US travel destination for several years, but recently Travel and Leisure named it the best in North America and second best in the world.  Of course there are many curvy road here, and there are no hill that aren't man-made.  Same holds true for the Outer Banks.

 

In all honesty, both areas are great vacation spots, but there really isn't that much car-related to do.

Wasn't implying car meetup at OBX.  Car roads are not great.  Have done motorcycle rides to Manteo and Elizabeth City.  Not bad.  There are a few cool lighthouses to see.  Probably more beaching, drinking and stuffing crab in face than driving.  There is one vineyard and a couple of microbreweries.  But its not a car place.  If anyone does a side trip to OBX let me know.  We'll get some crab and beer.  I'll be in Duck Sept 26-Oct 2 with the IM.  Fri-Fri rental.

I was saying Outer Banks since my son, Russ and his family live very close and we could tie in a visit to see them before or after.

 

My Speedster is jonesing for a fall trip--I'll tell you that!

 

I'm still continuing my annual quest to see who will caravan with me to the West Coat event again!

 

OBX was not my suggestion either.  It's just that we were planning on heading down there, and another day's drive or so to a meet would work out fine.

Ok, folks, we have a consensus on parts of it.

1. The weekend is October 11 & 12.  I imagine that some folks (myself included) will make it a long weekend and show up sometime Thursday or so.
2. The likely location is in and around Dahlonega, GA.  Check out dahlonega.org.  I've never been there, but Ron and Maddie Mullis sing its praises.

We are still researching places to stay and cruises.  I'll keep y'all posted as things progress.

So far the following folks have expressed interest:

• Me (and possibly Pam)

Anyone else?  It'd help to get a general idea of size as we look at lodging.

Not hearing a lot of love for this gathering, folks.  I'd hate to kill it due to lack of interest.  

I'd love to make this run, Lane, but I just can't commit before I know if my car is going to be right for driving.

We may, Jim.  Unfortunately this is 4-6 hours from me so I have to rely on others to do the leg work, particularly since I don't know the Dahlonega area.  I kinda hate to do that if it may be a bust.

Hey folks, this is on life support and I'm about to pull the plug for lack of interest unless more folks speak up.  Part of the problem is that I can't easily set it up from this far away.  If someone wants to plan something else, perhaps the Dragon or Asheville, I can help there a bit, but I think my work here is pretty much done.

I'd be interested in doing the Dragon or Ashville this fall. I'd love to meet some of you guys from this side of the Mississippi, but I'm never going to go to Carlisle. The Appalachians/Smoky Mountains sounds like a good mid-point for a lot of the eastern half of the country.

 

Perhaps some of the guys who would've come to CD3 had we had it (Marty? Rich? Joe F.?) could be persuaded to come-- if there was a definite plan, and somebody to head it up. What say you, men of the corn?

Asheville is further away than Carlisle for me, but a much nicer drive.  I'll never drive Natalie to Carlisle again.

After losing my wipers in the mountains in pouring rain & then having my trans go belly up, I wasn't mentally ready for CD3 this year.

After I got my car back, my LR brake caliper started leaking & I had to replace that.

I've recovered now & would be open to Illinois again, but could wait until next year too. 

I hope to still make that trip & meet you all.
