I hope it included "keep a spare under the bonnet" 8 ).

There is another trick you can pull if your not to far from home and it's not dark yet. If you find yourself with out a belt Let the engine cool for 20 minutes then crank and get up to speed quicky. then kill the key, push in the clutch and coast when you drop below 40 in high gear dump the clutch and turn on the key at the same time get back up to speed and kill it again do this over and over until get home or somewhere you can get a belt.If it is not a very hot day you'l make it with no trouble and a cool engine it would be wise to watch the temp hand the intire time If it gets to warm you will have to stop and let it cool down again another 20 minutes.
I would not recommend Barrys "get home" method. Carry a spare belt or two and be done with it.
I'll bet Barry wouldn't recommend this method either. I think that this is a technique which is born of desperation. There is a tow service near where I live called "Moneymakers." You can pay them to get you home or take a risk that Barry's method may do the job for you. A spare fan belt is the best, but desperate situations sometimes call for desperate measures.
