I replaced the oil cooler because a lot of the cooling fins on the old one were mashed, I wanted to add a hoover bit, and the foam trim around the old one was beginning to degrade.
Put all the shroud tinware back and reattached the alternator/backing plate/fan assembly and discovered the fan was rubbing against the shroud. hmmmmmmm.
Guess what I learned? There's a specific order I should have followed in tightening everything down. Tighten alternator strap BEFORE you secure the 10mm bolts on the sides of the fan shroud.
This made me a grumpy person for hours:
* "shroud's moving too much - better really tighten those 10 mm bolts." No.
* "maybe I need to move the alternator back a bit. I'll loosen the strap and pull on it while tightening the strap." No.
* "maybe I need to move the alternator forward a bit. I'll loosen the strap and push on it while tightening the strap." No.
* "maybe I need to use a mallet on the shroud to get it to sit deeper in the cylinder tin." No.
* "maybe beer will help." Yes, but the &*&$*% fan is still going to rub and I'll be more stupid than I already am.
* "maybe I need to loosen the 10mm bolts holding the shroud to the tin and push on the shroud." No.
* "maybe I need to pull on the shroud." No.
* Time to sleep.
* "maybe I need to loosen everything and try again." No (wrong order).
* "maybe I should secure the alternator first, check that the fan isn't rubbing, then tighten down the shroud bolts." Ah ha!
I'm not stupid, I'm just a little slow . . .
and maybe a little stupid.
