I've got 4 years to think about this before I have to spend money. Daughter starting med school this July. Thank goodness she is the last one. At that time my wife will likely let me spend 40-50k on myself. That being said I'm looking at 2 options.
1. Sell my IM and build my dream IM.
2. Keep my IM and buy a slightly used Spyder.
Like I said I've got a while to think about it.
I always liked the Porsche color "stone grey" with a cognac colored interior. Fellow SOCer up in NJ had one that showed up at Pumpkin Run.
Gray is a true neutral, ask an accomplished photographer. Gray cards are used for exposure and color balance - in the film days anyway. Any color is complimented by a gray field. Stone gray is lovely, drool.

The coupe above is grey, but with a purple/voilet hue (on my computer, anyway), and that will really limit the interior colors that look good with that car (my first choices would be black or dark blue). Browns and greys are generally neutrals, but you have to be careful when using them together as they don't always go. The Speedster above, on the other hand, I wouldn't call grey, but a very soft, muted green, and with the dark brown (Woofie called it cognac) interior it looks stunning...
Morgie- Intermeccanica does that on it's higher hp cars to make the platform stiffer.

I wouldn't worry about 'copying' a car you really like. After all, the only people in the world who would know, are we idiots on this website. For three days out of the year, someone will say, "Look, Phil copied so and so's car". But that's just Carlisle.
The rest of the time, you'll be driving around in something you really want, and strangers will never know the difference. But you'll be happy.
There is no need to 'be original'; there is need to be in love with your own car.
And if that happens to reflect another one that you really like, then so be it.
^ Bob is spot on about personalizing your car to what you really prefer! So what if there is another like it out there somewhere in the continental United States. Don't dilute your gratification with your car because of color. We're not girls worrying about wearing the same outfit or shoes as someone else at a party.
Additionally, making the car TOO different (original) minimizes the marketability in the event you need to sell. Think of how many cars for sale have been brutalized on here because of its 'odd' color or color combination.
I had VS build me a black car, like a zillion other Speedsters out there, but I doubt that makes it less cool! I'm just saying….
P.S. - I vote that you keep your beautiful IM and get a Spyder (for variety and different thrill).

Phil: I'm doing exactly the same thing with my IM6 build. Lots of lovely combinations available.
Stone grey was an original Porsche color option for 1957, listed as "special", or "supplemental", or "additional" color, depending on the source of info. Listed as Porsche #5710. Our monitors may show it differently on different computers, and some paint companies have their own formulas. It's also one of those colors that look different in differing lights. I chose it as my color, and I think SSA got their interpretation from PPG or Dupont. Scott's car was my inspiration.
Jim I love your car it is just fantastic looking and one of my trips to Santa Monica I am going to ring you up.
I am a year or so away from (hoping) building new and stone grey w/ red interior is at the top of my list wish list.

I had them polished ... Yoko's I think 185&205 giving same circumference as a std 15 wheel
That diagonal bar does provide a little more strength to the chassis, for those Intermeccanicas that have larger engines and appropriate suspension. It ties the horizontal side beams to the vertical beams at the rear of the cabin.

I never realized you were in Fiji. How about posting a few pics of your car.
The Morgan Motor Company (yes, they're still in business and still building the same basic cars they always have) has one of those 'car builders' on their website (which they insist on calling a car 'configurator').
The cool thing is that they offer about 15 different interior colors and an exterior gray that is something like the gray in your photo. So, you could get some idea what your car would look like with quite a range of colors - some of which you may not have considered.
It's a pretty cool website, anyway.

Here's another possibility: Slate Gray. This is John Leader's '04-ish JPS GT-- probably the nicest car John Steele ever built.
I STILL wonder if I should have just aped his taste 100% on my build. The color choices were/are out of this world. Very German. Very, very cool.
Interestingly, Morgan is now the largest British-owned auto manufacturer.

That car is beautiful. Ray's car is also very nice. Was slate grey a 356 color? Last 2 cars I built were not original colors. Had an ivory spyder and another BMW sterling grey metallic spyder. This time I would really like to go with a Porsche period correct color. I also really like the non-metallic flat colors. For some reason they just look more vintage. Although I am starting to see more new cars like subarus done in flat colors.

I've always - since sixteen years old - owned some sort of LBC (Little British Car), from a Bugeye, to a TD, MGB(s), TR6, and love the colours of those cars. In fact, I just sold my Sebring MGB project, for which I had been collecting parts for years.
So, do I do a Porsche replicating car in a British sports car colour scheme?
Or stay with the German theme? John Leader's car is a gorgeous combination.
It's a tough life with decisions such as these.
