Welcome aboard. I'm from God's own country also, but currently living in the good ol' US of A. Having lotsa fun, especially since I purchased my speedster a couple of weeks back. Woohoo! Finally.

I must say, after trying for years to get a reasonably priced 356 back home, the number of cars on offer here for realistic prices takes your breath away. Where are you based? I was in Sydney, but I believe that there is someone down Melbourne way that makes/imports right hand drive cars - they might be able to get you parts. There is definitely a builder in NZ - Platinum Speedsters I think they are called, based out of Auckland.
In melbourne Victoria. I had my eye out for 6 months after missing out on one in WA that sold on ebay for 16100AUD! I got this one from Sydney. I think it was orignally from the UK. Only has 6000miles on the clock. sking 35K and I offered him a lazy 20 and he took it! I'm rapped. Just love it as now I have 10k to spend on the engine. Thinking a wrx conveersion.
How do I get pics on?
Funny thing is when it comes to greek cuisine, when you grow up eating it every day, you tend not to go out and look for it!
But kalispera to all tria, pente exi owners in the US
Back to the 356 stuff...
Guys, where do I get a decent luggage rack for the car? I am happy to ship from the US if required. I work for Boeing and tend to head to seattle a bit too?
Hi Nick,

I'm up on Brisbane and about to tackle the build, everything on order at the moment. just worried about how to get things though the transport Dept to achieve rego, seems they do everything possible to stop kit builders in OZ.

I'm putting in a 2.5 Subaru engine, have the flared wheel body to fit 8" x 18" wheels, so its going to be a nice ride.

I'm still have a lot to work out such as instruments, seats and a few other items.

I have a VW with the ball joint front end and IRS rear..... will no doubt be on here a bit to try and find some answers along the way

If you have a mind email or call me smithwb@gmail.com or 07 3201 2084 at home... 0411 883145

Hi Nick,

I see from your photo at the start of July that the car still had NSW plates on it from when you purchased it. If/when we eventually return to Oz, I am thinking I might take the speedy back. Of course there would be the RHD conversion to do, which with the integrated fibreglass dash won't be the easiest, but my biggest concern would be fighting with the RTA trying to get the car registered. Can you advise what your car was registered as in NSW and what you registered it as in VIC if you have done so already?

Cheers,
Dom
Nick

I am in thailand and about to embark on a RHD conversion to a CMC body.
labour here is pretty cheap, so are you interested in a RHD dash. The incremental cost to make 2 should be pretty low. I do not have the body in hand yet so this will be after Christmas I imagine

You could cannabalise a RHD Beetle, or hang on a bit until Jason and I are ready with a bolt on A-arm subframe with rack and pinion steering. RHD then is a simple matter of using Golf MK-II rack that you can buy in Oz.

Also going the Suby engine but to a 915 gearbox.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the info. I am interested in te conversion, but it will be a while till I am at that point. It looks like we are about to move to California (mild Winters again - woohoo!!!) so it will be a couple of years by the look till I need to do this. Just getting some information at this stage on the registration process back in Oz. I know back in QLD where I am from, the Dept of Transport isn't the most lenient on kit car rego. Of course, I haven't lived there in 10 years, so things might have changed since then.

Cheers,
Dom
HI everyone,
Sorry for the late post.
As to who made my car originally I think it was imported from the UK!
With respect to getting it on road you will need to show equivalent compliance of the remanufactured vehicle. That means an engineering certificate from an approved engineering group. The vehicle is actually registers still as a VW sedan!
Anyway thanks for the chatt fellow aussies. Good to here from you.
