Maybe you are referring to the GT Carrera/Spyder style mirror housing like on John Leader's and Scott Sloan's cars? Their cars builders (IM, JPS) could certainly get one for you, and I've seen them advertised - maybe spydersports.com. A bit pricey as I recall, $200+ (? not sure), but what a great accessory for the GT look.
Chuck - if Greg is right, you're looking for Carrera-style mirror covers which are available from a variety of sources. Aftermarket housings are made of fiberglass, but the originals were made of aluminum ($$). I got mine from GT Werk - (www.gtwerk.com/). Expensive, but in keeping with the GT look of my build. The housings are usually painted the same color as the car.

As with any side mirrors, placement is critical. In Speedsters it's often desirable to be able to see your mirrors "through the windshield" so when your sidecurtains are in they don't obscure your mirrors.
The opening of my GT mirror housing is nearly parallel to the top edge of the hood - in other words, they are out on the fenders. My mirrors mounted with a single hole in the body, which make them quite adjustable.
Also, I put a convex mirror in the right side housing further improving the view. I had Aero mirrors on my first Speedster; the Carrera-style units are much more useful and actually work very well because of their adjustability.
...along the lines of mirrors, looking in them and design/style. I followed a thread on the site about how to adapt a typical leftie mirror to a useful rightie after I added the second mirror to my car.

One, I was sort of compelled to locate the right mirror in a, oh gawd, 'mirror' location on the right side. This perpetuated what I have come to feel is an aesthetic choice made by the builder but a poor choice for a driver! Mirrors to close to the windscreen are not the best location. A little further out on the fender would function, for me, a lot better!

Two, vibration is a real pain-in-the-ass. My mirrors, particularly the right one, wander due to the rigid nature of car's suspension.

Lucky for me I seldom look back.
