Fiberfab speedster ID tagHi,

I recently purchased a Fiberfab Int. Californian (wide body) speedster. It cam with the ID plate shown on the attached pic. Where is the proper place to mount this, The door frame? The Florida title I received with the car uses the FiberFab ID number as the VIN number on the title so I will need to mount the plate to get the car registered here in Indiana. Thanks in advance for the help.

The FL "Title" is a Certificate of Origin (COO) and is for the fiberglass body only. Indiana will most likely use the donor VW Chassis # (some call it a VIN but it isn't the modern 17 character VIN).  They may combine the two and call it a FiberFab Calif.  Often they want to see COO, VW title, and stack of parts receipts so they can charge appropriate sales tax.  There is no fixed place - 98% are probably never mounted.  Inside the driver's door is good place for it or up under front hood just above where battery is located.  356's had an aluminum plate that hide hinges in the drivers side door opening up front.

The Title I have is not a COO title. It is the actual title the car was registered under for tags in Florida. Not sure how they got this done this way. I have had other VW based cars and always titled them as a VW beetle using the VW VIN and tile. The Florida title has FC1486 as the actual VIN number.  The Year is shown as a 2007 , the make - PORS. Body- 2D. I will post the outcome of what type of fun I will have trying to register this in Indiana.  I wish they would have not titled it as a 2007 as the model year. It would have been much better as a car made in the 1957 or in the 60's to help exempt it on the value.

Jimmy,

You may want to wait to hear from other replica owners in Indiana regarding registration.  All states have their own policies regarding replicas, and you can sometimes save time and money if you know which office to use, even which person in that office that's knowledgeable.  Best of luck and please let others know how it goes.

Jimmy:  The Fiberfab plate you have also identifies the sales person at Fiberfab (FC - whom ever that was at the time of sale) and the Fiberfab order number of the body when bought (1486).  I have one, too (so does Wolfgang) as well as the Fiberfab Certificate of Origin for the body.  Both of them live quietly in my file cabinet.  I never mounted the plate.  If, because of circumstances you use that as the VIN (but I honestly think that registering it in Indiana as a VW with the VIN stamped on the tunnel might be the way to go), Wolfgang's suggestion of mounting it under the hood somewhere prominent would work, unless Indiana DMV folks want to be able to see it from outside of the car (like, on the dash inside of the windshield.

Whichever one you use in Indiana will depend on which one does NOT require emissions testing.
