Guys, I've just got back from holidays (a stinkin' hot week on the edge of a lake; it was fun! (even with the kids)), read this thread from the beginning, and the original poster's attitiude to the advice he got surprised me; talk about someone getting upset when what's offered isn't what he wants to hear. And not all that much thread-drift; very impressive!
And no worries Carl; rice and beans is actually very healthy (as long as it's brown rice). All that meat just clogs the arteries....Yoda out.
The turn this took in the last 24 hrs is very productive, as opposed to posting "you're smoking something" on some guy's classified ad.
Guidelines are useful if you are painting in big, broad strokes. But after 15+ years in this hobby, I would counter that where a vehicle is born is less a determinant of a buyer's future happiness than what running gear ended up in it.
For example, Kevin Z has been buying an occasional CMC, lifting the body off, and rolling a full A-arm suspension underneath. Add a nice engine/transaxle and block out the 25 y/o body, lay on some good paint- and what you've got is every bit as nice/nicer than 95% of what is available new. But it's a CMC, so a hard/fast price guide makes it worth south of 20K? I'll give that all day long.
This guy's CMC was noting like that, but a thing is worth whatever the market will bear. It's counterproductive for us to collectively evaluate the "fairness" of every single ad that goes up here. If you've been following- prices for ALL air-cooled stuff have been rising crazily, and it makes no sense for existing owners to keep trying to put a value lid on an asset they already hold. Let the market take care of pricing these things.
There's nothing wrong with the car or the price. The problem may be in how it has been advertised, even here.
I'm no marketing guy, but if I could offer some suggestions:
You mentioned that the seller is motivated, but no price other than the original "ask" of $22K, which seems to be more than the seller would accept. I've always been confused by this strategy- name a price in the ball-park and negotiate from there.
You mention a few odds and ends that need finished up. Finish them. If the ride-height is wrong, fix it. If the breather needs moved, move it. THEN take pictures and list it as totally complete.
More and bigger pictures would be very helpful. There are very few shots of the interior, and a lot of the wheels. The interior shots all have the tonneau covering half of the interior. There are no shots of the top or side-curtains.
More details generally would help. You just mentioned an A1 sidewinder that was never mentioned in the ad.
You're going to have to bump the ad a few times to keep it on the first page. The last post on the ad was May 31, and to even find it I had to scroll through two full pages of other ads. If it's not sold, keep adding details or changes.
