Next time you drop the sump plate during an oil change, place a magnet on the inside surface (if it is steel) ...... This was used years ago when a magnetic drain plug was the rage for $20.00 +...... The magnet may be a freebie or a cheap bar magnet from ACE hardware.... It works, but its really a "Too Late" indicator usually..... My .02
So much in a VW engine is non-magnetic - brass, aluminum, magnesium. I'd think cheaper neodymium magnet in sump or a magnetic sump drain plug would do same thing for far less $.
I was just wondering what you guys thought about it.
It's probably very good at what it's designed to do, Ray, but I think any of the lower cost alternatives (cow magnet, hard drive magnets, or any magnet on the sump cover or filter would do the same thing for a lot less $$$. I like the idea of a long bar magnet on the filter as well as a magnet in the sump area. Al
