Some of you may be aware that my clutch package was giving me some serious grief and I was getting near the end of my rope. I started with the Kennedy disc which came with the Subaru/VW type 1 tranny adapter. Organic on both sides with a heavy marcel in the sandwich but no springs around the hub. It was unbearable taking off from a stop sign. Heavy, heavy chatter. I yanked the engine and installed a VW disc which had a thinner but double marcel between the discs and six little springs around the hub. It lasted about 20 takeoffs before it chattered in protest. I yanked the engine for the third time and brought the flywheel, pressure plate and all clutch discs I could find related to the project and got them down to a very sympathetic group of lads called Ottawa Clutch. They build custom clutches http://www.bullyclutch.com/ for almost anything and were keen to find a solution and did they ever. They first checked the flywheel and stage 1 pressure plate from Kennedy Engineering and they proved to be accurate and well made. So..what to do for a disc? They settled on a VW hub with springs like a Soob disc and put an organic w/cooling slots disc on the flywheel side, installed a thick marcel in the center and then finished the pressure plate side with a segmented kevlar disc. They handed me the disc and said I looked kinda nervous. Nervous ? I said....I'm xxxxing ready to cry. If this doesn't work, I'm screwed and don't know where to turn next. "Take it easy they said" and handed me an invoice for $97 plus tax. "We like to solve problems " another tech said. "Let us know how it works".I had it in the next day and I'm happy to say it's smoother than a baby's bum. Just perfect. I also took Jack Crosby's recommend and ordered a longer clutch operating lever. They sent a piece with a wrong size hole so I cut and welded up another I had on hand. It works fine. Sorry for being so long winded but this might give some insight to others who may be considering going over to the "other side".

Wow - is it just me or is there some REALLY uneven wear on the backside of disk (left in the picture - center picture)?

2 o'clock and 7 o'clock.

I assume the left side of the middle picture is the old disc? Maybe it's also an optical illusion but it looks like the whole center assembly is shifted to one side in relation to the organic outer.

Good observations, Angela. It's just my bad photo skills and bad lighting making the left disc in the center pic look offset. I was just trying to show some comparison to the makeup of the discs. In the right picture, the left disc which is the stock VW part shows heavy damage from only a very short experience with the Kennedy stage 1 plate. This VW disc is of unknown original quality and was given to me new by Warren Miles when he built up my 1915 engine. That disc performed perfectly in about 10,000 highway miles but clearly cannot deal with the stage 1 Kennedy plate and flywheel with the Soob torque. I'm still learning.
Mike, that's the name for the spring plate between the two contact surfaces. When the mechanical parts clamp the clutch plate between them, the spring plate's job is to absorb the resulting reverberation and dampen it.

That's how one spinney part can engage a non-spinney part without fracturing it like a celery stalk.

David, that's fantastic! How 'bout that VERY reasonable bill for the work? Brilliant!
