Just drove my Speedster for the first time. Yes, I'm in love with her.
Sat for almost 5 years without being touched. Under a car cover, in a garage. Gas tank had more rust inside than I ever thought possible. Easy enough, just order another 63 VW gas tank. LOL. Not quite, the filler neck is too long. So, some quick cutting and welding and we got that done. Sending unit was also rusty as hell. Soaked her in white vinegar all day long, rust practically fell off and she works!
Had a stock beetle muffler. It boggles my mind the the heat riser tubes were open. (Seemingly stock-ish engine, 1641 maybe with dual Kadrons). You can see rust outlines on my engine tin the exact shape of the heater risers. Somebody put 3500 miles on this build with wide open heat riser tubes. It literally just blows my mind that it was like this. I put an Empi hotdog system on her for now. Probably until next year.
ALL the electricals work. Well, all but the brake lights. I've dug alot of old neglected cars out and resurrected, never had this good of luck with the electricals.
Still have to flush the brake fluid out, and basic tune up stuff (points, valves, etc...) but she made it home.
Man. I just wanna drive her some more. Unfortunately (fortunately), the weather is perfect this weekend, so I'll have to settle for boating instead. I'll sure be thinking about her though...
3531 miles on the build, and 18.5 are now mine!
