Well after seeing Mango's Speedster on the Coast I decided to go with a retro look not Black or Silver like I thought I was going with for the last coupkle of years. It's kind of Stone Grey I guess andt he whole paint job is a DIY job with a hell of a lot of polishing out the orange peel. I gotta say it's turning out pretty good for a $50 Stanley paint gun and and old compressor.

Rick,

If you have alot of orange peel, let me share a killer shortcut. Now this is coming from people who have to paint the car out in the pasture in the morning as we don't have a paint booth. The only time we've used a booth is when we painted my Dad's car.

There are super-fine sand papers designed for this job. 3,000 grit and 1500 grit are what we use. The 1500 will take the orange peel off. After the 1500, you can run a polisher over it once and you are DONE. It takes a full day of cut and polish and knocks it down to two hours or less.

Gaahhh... I mis wrote. 1500 first, followed by 3000 THEN polish. DOH!!!!

But you've already discovered the uber fine sand paper trick. REally like the color you picked!

Dang, seriously guys, this fine sanding paper takes sooo much labor out of finish work. It's one thing if you have a great heated spray booth where you can bake the paint, etc. But for the rest of us mortals who are painting cars in barns, garages, sheds, and in our case, the pasture, this is the bomb diggity.

Oh and Vince? The body rub thing? Oh baby, you have no idea...

Dang! I SO admire you guys who can pull off a paintjob this way!

Me? I bought a topnotch gun, read everything I could find but still couldn't squirt paint evenly without either major runs or too thin and not shiny paint results. I've tried on a '77 Toyota FJ40 and on my '98 Dodge dieseltruck. Both are colored but won't stand up to a close inspection.

Very nice job, OP, and good color choice too.

I've just bought an IM roadster that's gonna be on it's way to me next week. A great looking 2001 issue with just 4700 miles since new but it's cream colored with red leather and already I'm thinking about how I might make it seal gray. If it hadn't been such a killer deal I'd have passed because of the color. Couldn't pass up the price and now thing that the biege/cream makes it look like a chick's car.
Thanks, my sound-barrier-breaking/fire-stomping/BERT-luvin/caricature-drawing/house-buying BRUTHA!!! Hope all is well with you & family.

Rick - after seeing your car color, and similar colors on other Speedsters, I'm very seriously considering that color (instead of black) when I eventually re-paint my car. Look forward to seeing the finished product (results of your color sanding).

Peace - Out!
I went with 1500 and then polished on my dune buggy, I pleased with how it came out!

After I painted it with just one side sanded (before bluffing):

Hi Rob,

I used 3M products (I pick them up at the Pomona Swap Meet), a cutting compound, then the medium cut and finally the finish. The wool first and then the foam.

I just painted my 34' and did the same thing, here's a couple pictures of it;

I also 'sanded' 400 to 600 to 800 and finally 1200, then bluffed out my old 47' Boles Aero..

Thanks Jim, I needed to put a hood on the 34' for several years, I finally got to it this summer and decided to paint the entire car, it's in the uphostry shop now updating the interior. Since I got so ambitious with the 34' I thought I'd get started on a project I've put off for the past six or seven years; two straight axle Vettes (a 59' and a 62') I have the chassis all ready for the 62' with basically a C4 running gear (I did that about four years ago) but I need to get busy with the car which needs everything; I recently picked up the 59' (which is in parts) so I thought I would do them together.

I also need to finish up the trailer, I'm going to work on it today. I need to do the 110v wiring and then start building the interior :-) I've got some neat ideas for that.

Hey Jim,

Good looking truck!

I sold my beauty this spring - a mustard yellow RHD BJ40 (diesel power) factory softtop that was so near perfect I wouldn't drive it, and I've got two more cruisers here. One's a well setup '77 with lockers, twinstick transfercase Australian trans for low gearing that needs the head put on and to get running. The other is a nice looking old '64 with a 4" lift, floorshifter, winch, blah, blah. Probably enough parts in my barn to put together another one but I ran out of energy with Anemia or bad blood from a liver issue that nearly killed me so all my hard to work on stuff just sits. I've got two Dodge diesel 4x4 trucks outside too that are just interuppting the grgrass growing.

Good thing I've got 12 acres here, and my wife will have the end-all garage sale when I croak!
You have some COOL Toys, Ken! I miss my FJ, sold it a while back because we were getting too old to get beat up driving that beast (350, 750cfm, headers, trans splitter, lockers, yadi yadi, yada). Got all my parts from Specter Off-Road in Chatsworth, CA. Here's a link if you don't already have it (mostly pre-85 Landcruisers).

When I did the 350 conversion, there was absolutely NOTHING legal about the engine/emissions, so I sold it to a kid in Oregon. It's crazy what kind of prices they get for these FJ's nowadays.

I bought my Range Rover new in '91 (Classic - Great Divide Edition). Much more comfortable and still very formidable. Still rocking it with 297,000 miles.

If you haven't already known about the website Expedition Portal, here's a link. It's a very cool site for serious off-roaders. Free membership, navigate to the forum, then navigate to the Toyota/FJ/Landcruiser page (the website is for all makes & models of 4x4s). You'll spend hours on it.
