Congrats!! Drive on ...
Very nice! Do you know any more about the motor? (heads? cam? carbs? valve sizes?)
Very Cool...
Nice Steve. Now to register it. PM me if you would like to have the details of how I registered mine here in AZ emission exempt. It's no secret really, mine is pan based and DMV agreed to use the VW manufacture date stamped onto the chassis but register the car as what it looks like (a P car).
If your AZ DMV will let you register it as a VW, like it is already registered in Calif. I wouldn't do what Doug is suggesting. It will be much easier to sell outside of AZ if the time ever comes. Trying to register any car in Calif. (and a lot of other states) with some other states "special" registration can be a real nightmare.
AZ law provides exemption from emissions inspection a "motor vehicle manufactured in or before the 1966 model year" (ARS 49-542.J.2(a)). My car was deemed to fit into this category because my chassis number reflects 1964 mfg by VW.
If your chassis is 1967 or newer, AZ law also has a collectible vehicle exemption (ARS 49-542.J.2(k)). Here is a link to the specifics.
I went to DMV expecting to argue for registration as a VW merely hoping for exemption. In fact it was DMV's insistence the Make be registered as P-car but the Model as Special. I have already made burial arrangements in my car so resale will not be an issue ;-)
Right now it is titled in CA as 1968 VW. If I am reading the law correctly, it appears as though it would be exempt by collectible insurance -- which I have thru American Modern. If we use the "collectible" exemption, would they still register it as 68VW? How do I want them to title it? I agree with Troy that I do not want to limit myself and make it harder for resale.
Or do I ask them to reg as a Porsche?
Can you read your chassis number? If so, cross-reference that against the VW manufacture year chart (which I will be pleased to post if you like). If your chassis number is pre-1967 you may have the same experience I had (which in my opinion is better than going the collectible route because it is without insurance policy conditions and limitations)
You want something like Replica/Special Construction/kit car or something like that after Porsche. Even "Vintage Speedster" would be fine.
Troy is correct. Don't change the title if you don't have to. If you ever sell it to someone here in CA. it will be a slam dunk, otherwise CA. registration on a special constructed vehicle is indeed a nightmare with the possibility of not being able to register it here.
Just my 2c
