I pretty much did what Wolfgang mentioned on my car:  That is, I made a skirt of shop floor rubber padding (available at Home Depot or Lowe's on a big role - they cut off what you need) and attached it to the existing fiberglas firewall to overlap by an inch or two.  The bottom of the skirt is cut to closely fit against (or overlap) the engine tin to seal it up.  Seems to work well.

You don't have to go nuts sealing up the firewall-to-engine gap.  Not a lot of heat gets in that particular area, so just get it so it looks nice and that should be enough.

FWIW, VS leaves that space above the tranny open (presumably on purpose), in addition to cutting out the round eight-inch hole in front of the fan.

The sides of the engine compartment are also open, for about six inches, at the very rear (near the tail lights), and those openings are into the wheel wells.

They do use foam rubber seals around the tins at the sides and rear, anywhere near the exhaust.

"Anyone ever have those H foam engine seals burn?  Mine are kinda close to the headers and stunk pretty bad when I first got it running but don't smell any more. I don't see any burning but I haven't taken it out on a long trip yet."

Burn, no.....

Melt into a squirming puddle?

Yes.

Check to see if they've started to melt.

They seem less sensitive to the header temps after they've turned into a melted puddle.
