Wisconsin? No question. Beck. www.beckspeedster.com.
I don't own a Beck, but I'll second that.
New or used?
Bigger question, what's your budget?
If you're a "driver", and enjoy ripping around more than just going for ice cream or cruising down to the beach, the inherent torque of a 2 liter (or larger !) engine is just so much more fun in these cars. 130-160 hp, all in by 5500 or 6,000rpm with significantly more bottom end/lower midrange (where we do almost all of our driving) and a maintenance schedule that is the same as stock (or very close), all in a reliable, fairly reasonably priced package anywhere from 2007-2276 cc's just fits these cars so well.
And yes, I know you can build a stock stroke 1776, 1835 or 1915 to make the same horsepower #, but doing it at 7,000rpm or more will mean more maintenance, bottom end/lower midrange torque will seriously suffer (and will result in slightly poorer mileage), while still being fun you'll have to be more watchful of which gear you're in all the time (to make sure the engine doesn't fall off the power curve), and this will make driving (even just toodling around town in traffic) more difficult. Looking at spending 25k -28k
I believe Justin's car sold already... Probably won't find a nicer Beck anywhere close to that price, and I have nothing within 10K of Frank's budget currently.
Smoking deal on a Beck. Wow.
Maybe all of the Newbies here (myself included) with intentions of buying their first speedster should come together with a volume package offer of 4-5 cars to the selected vendors and manufacturer for getting a deal. 4xCBs, 4xRanchos, 4xFuchs, 4xetc.... should make for better deals for everyone. I'm in.
Thoughts?
To get a well sorted used example you should expect to spend $30k or so. A new somewhat loaded VS will be in that range. I would expect some sort of bugs to work out on any newly built car. After a couple of years of fixing the problems I have concentrated on performance upgrades. I have had 6 Porsche over the years. By far my current ongoing hobby is the most fun I have ever had with my clothes on.

Why? The builders are already building...
The question is whether you want to pay the $10K now or later. PLEASE do yourself a favor and drive to Bremen, IN and talk to the Beck guys. If you don't, I will be the first to tell you I told you so.
No one's building for me yet. I'll exhaust every research avenue before I put down that first deposit with any builder.

Look at this on eBay:

1957 Porsche 356 BECK Speedster
That's waaaaay pricey for a used Beck, and that all white is an acquired taste. You could get a pretty loaded new one for that.
Lane, that's what I thought. Plus not digging the all white at all. I am looking for a wide body anyway. Thanks.
Some pretty cool speedsters here. 38 of them. Some IMs some BEcks. Some decently priced.
An outlaw widebody..

Julio. It might help if you say super widebody rather than just widebody in all your messages, if that is really what you want, which is what you have told me.
Hello Troy. Maybe I am the one that is confused. 'still' This is my take on the 3 photos I have enclosed. Pewter speedster: wide body (intermediate?). Green IMAT300 is your car superwide. and Silver color speedster is soft flare. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thank you,

1st and 2nd cars are super widebody, the 3rd is not. I need to see the front to tell if the 3rd is a CMC or the mild Vintage flare version, but I'm pretty sure it is the mild Vintage flare.
This is the front of the 3rd silver car. Side on the body too.

Yup. That's the Vintage mild flare.
Ok, thanks for confirming.
Now the question is, what style floats your boat?
Hello all, I am in the same boat the Julio is in. Planning the first speedster and getting more confused by the day on body styles from each builder. I love the wider rear end profiles, but the front flares on some approach cartoonish proportions. Id love to see a lineup of body styles out there side by side and by builder to have some comparisons. If i can help put that together I would contribute. Do most of the builders manufacture their own body kits or are the for the most part built in 1 or 2 places and modified for the builders? Im getting really excited about putting a car together and am in no rush to do so. Thank you to all for a great knowledge base with these forums and the input from owners.

Tom, that poses even more questions. Is it Iggy wide or JLO wide??
Paul, thanks for chiming in. As far as I know, on the 3 photos I posted earlier in this thread this is how it goes.
Photo1: AZ plate: Super Wide body from VS
Photo2: IMAT300. This car was empowered by Troy Sloan. I believe it is from JPS a Super wide body.
Photo3: Silver car is a soft flared from VS.
VS and JPS both use the same bodies. Fiberfab/CMC/Street Beasts used a smaller flare. Anybody have a picture handy?

Ok. There it is. Every Speedster flare version has been represented in this thread.
Theron lock the thread and put it in the Knowledge base, so we don't have to keep answering the same question. Thank you.
There is always a big fat ass in the yearly calendar. Some great shots to be had there. Wide is cool, just not my cup of tea, but will always be a bold statement, and you gotta love the extra rubber on the road.
Always have extra rubbers, it's safer!
Thanks guys. No more quedtions on wideness here.

The heavier wheels/tire combination increases unsprung weight, which I would expect affects the ride adversely. Everyone I've spoken to about the superwides says the ride is very rough.
