So, we have been having a bit of a thaw and it got into the high teens. My speedster was looking lonely in the heated garage. Since it didn't feel so bad to me outside, and since the roads were dry, I elected to take her for a bit of a spin.

The initial start was a bit rough. There were coughs, sputters, and several cranks of the key before we finally got things going. Just when I thought a jump might be imminent she roared to life. (I need to get some pointers from the experts on how to start things up when it's pretty cold.) Once I got her started with the top up and side curtains in place, we were off for a 30 min cruise. The heat seaters kept things very comfy. Thank-you Carey and Crew!

Any other members of the SOC Polar Bear Club? Anyone else indulging in a little winter drive? Any ideas on what I should be doing differently when I prepare or operate the car in cold temps? Normally the car fires up right away. Tonight I was probably pushing the limits of my battery.

Hey the weather is looking downright balmy in Iowa this weekend... Maybe a Sunday cruise.

You need an automatic battery tender to keep battery on trickle charge.  Dual carb (?) they don't have electric chokes so need to pump gas a few times with key on (if electric fuel pump). Never hit the promised 71 degrees here in NW FL!

I have electric fuel pump with dual carbs (1915 Raby T1), I'll let the pump work and give it a little more gas next time. I'm buying the trickle charger tomorrow...

Winter driving isn't for everyone.

Ted

Teby S and I went for a winter drive as well on Sunday.  The temps topped out around 60 degrees with some low clouds casting shadows everywhere.  We had lunch and ventured into the foothills for some mountain driving. Afterwards we stopped for a cold beer.

Yeah, winter driving is tough. I didn't even wear a hat to prevent sunburn.

While this is my first winter of ownership, we actually test drove the car in Bettendorf, Iowa along the Mississippi River about 1 year ago when we purchased the car. As I remember it was about 6F. This was pre-seat heaters, top down and in full snowmobile attire. We got crazy stares, thumbs ups or horn salutes from everyone. Shortly thereafter the car went to the auto spa in Bremen. I took delivery in the spring.

We need a polar bear speedster club with long sleeve T-shirts. Everyone could buy one but shirts at a could be purchased reduced cost after "earning it" with a documented top down cruise in freezing temps.

Lane: I will get there one time when you're home and I'll come over to your cars and coffee... One more excuse to visit my sister.

Tom - When I opened this thread, the instant I saw your avatar I SPEWED my Pespi all over the place.  You're one FUNNY mfr!

Oh, almost forgot to mention the 73 degrees this afternoon in SoCal. Drove the old Speedy to a couple of business appointments today.

Jared - its always great to hear about another SOCer enjoying a drive in the Speedster. Wishing you many more miles of top-down cruising enjoyment!

Oh BTW Jim...bite me!...wopping high of 28* here today...the Holidays are over time for SPRING...NOW!

My car has been in a tent for two months now. We are in the 4th year of a drought here at Lake Tahoe. It hit 48F today and I got really itchy to take her out. We should have 3 to 4 feet of snow on the ground and there is none. My house is at 6500 ft. Heavenly is in my backyard and they are about 60% open with mostly home made snow. The snow level for the most part has been above 7000ft. The Sierras are notorious for huge storms that can leave 10 or more feet in a couple of days. If we do not get some serious snow the boat ramps to the lake will never open this year.
