In the previous episode (“ I didn’t paint. I didn’t powder.”); you may recall that the new wheels could not be fitted to my plastic Speedster without spacers.

I was surprised at the cost of ready made wheel spacers; the best price I could find was about $50 a wheel. Well, I’ll just make ‘em…not the best option. Strange how the most simple project can turn major. My time working on the Speedster is not worth much. Spacers were made in two parts...narrow stuff is cheaper than wide stuff.

I started writing how the spacers were made and that turned into an epic. The final cost of everything including mounting and balance was $1160.

I'll have to drill and tap for a counter sink screw to hold the spacers in place. The studs are replaced with 60 degree wheel bolts. Would have had to do the same if I had purchased the spacers. Pull the wheel and the spacers fall off. That's another project for another time.

I put Porsche 2L 914 Fuchs on my Speedster.  I had to put 3/8" spacers on the front to clear the Ghia disc brake calipers.  (Guess I could have ground on the calipers for clearance).  It also gave more room for the bearing cover caps.  I was unable to use the costly SS OEM caps on either the front or the back due to the bearing covers on front and the 36mm nut on the rear.  I bought deeper polished billet caps from ISP and they work fine.

Jim, I did read your post but you mentioned the only spacers you could find were very expensive. Just wanted others to know that you can buy them from Vintage Motorcars. They are reasonably priced.......And just another FYI for those interested, www.Mobelwagen.com is actually the manufacturer of the Vintage 190 wheels and Mobelwagen makes the same wheels under their brand (their wheel is called "Interceptor"). Their new version will fit our disc brakes without the need for spacers....and the wheels cost less than the Vintage 190's too. It's a win win. Cost is less and no spacers needed. I have them on my Speedster now.

Jon, I never buy what I can make.

Sometimes it bites me because I don't have all of the tooling of a full blown machine shop. My equipment is small. A real shop will have 100's of drawers full of special tools that allow them to make nearly anything. I have to make the tools I need. Building the spacers required a fixture to hold the blanks while being machined. It was bolted to the rotary table on my mill and allowed me to make all of the cuts. Making tooling takes time. Designing the part, no matter how simple takes time. When you're finished and installing the parts something will always bite you in the ass; i.e. the need for counter sunk screws to hold the parts to the disc so that when you take the wheels off the spacers won't fall off.

When I talked to Mobelwagen the person advised me that I would not need spacers...but they have large note on the site that plainly says that spacers are required for cars with disc brakes.

And they were.

I have the "interceptor" wheels.

Your car may be different.

Thanks Jim. I'm impressed with your skills and your knowledge...... FYI - Mobelwagen just recently changed their design (like in the last month or so) of the Interceptor Wheel and they no longer require spacers. I have the new design. Jon

My wheels arrived in 3 days 3 weeks ago. Guess they shipped older wheels. They have 4 shipping locations around the country. Different inventory in each,I guess.
