Hi everyone.

Been recommissioning my February purchased speedster (Uk built by Legend). As part of the 'recommissioning' process the mechanic decided that the best way to accommodate my new Fram Oil Filter was to cut a hole in the underside of the engine lid...in plain, ugly view through the grill. So much prettier than lowering the filter !?!?!?

ANyway,

Iwant ant to fit a new lid. Has anyone fitted an original speedster or 356 engine lid to their car? If so, was it straightforward, and does it look Frankenstein? I'm told that nearly all the kids are carbon copies...

Any advice appreciated.

I doubt a real engine lid will fit - the hinges and latches would have to be modified even if the inner lips (steel lid and fiberglass body) matched.  I know a coupe lid is a totally different shape.

Why not just fix fiberglass lid you currently have?  Remove lid, remove the grill, cut hole a bit larger, sand around the area on both sides (removing paint for 2-3"), apply aluminum foil tape  to make a bubble that clears the filter and re-fiberglass with resin and cloth.  When it's set up - lightly sand and respray black like it was.

I'm guessing your full flow filter is bolted to the fan shroud? Do the smart thing- get it out of the engine compartment, where all it's doing is pre-heating the cooling and carburetor intake air and is a bast*rd to change without spilling oil all over the place, and put it in the left rear fenderwell, where it can freely radiate heat. I've never heard of anyone fitting an original engine lid (that doesn't mean no one's done it).  I would spend some time fixing the one that came with the car. Al

@ALB @WOLFGANG Thank you for the replies guys! And that's great advice about the Fram ALB. Fixing the original lid is the obvious route but it's concerning me a little as the previous owner glued the grill in. Forcing the grill out may cause even more damage.

But thanks for the step by step WOLFGANG! If I get the grill out I'll be following that

Sounds like the 2am Ebay engine lid purchase isn't the best route to a repair Glad I asked.

Hi guys, just to let you all know a real speeedster engine lid will fit. I'd did it, as l wanted the louvres to look right. At the time it was cheaper to buy the steel lid and have the louvres pressed in than to buy a pressed skin from GT Werks. How prices have changed.

Anyway heres is a few shots, the one with the lid closed is without any filler, gaps were good don't you think.
