simply bash one end of the air cleaner with a big hammer, problem solved.
Build an offset/remote air filter assembly like the VW Karmann Ghia has.
Shim it so it's angled with the lid.
The simplest fix would be to run dual carbs.
That's not going to be the cheapest fix.
I'm not sure what options you have with that big dual sittin up there.
Anyone else running a big single carb?
Ted
Paging Dr. Clock.
You can make it fit with the single Weber carb. I had one on my 1915 and also now with my Soob. There are a couple of "thickness' " of that filter available. I think mine is one and three quarter inches high. Some gentle mods to the deck lid assy will clear it. The 32/36 carb is a dream to drive with....adjust it once and forget it. As my buddy Ron used to say, don't piss your pants running around changing things, just make it work !
I had some help, but she's too tired to come over right now.........

After some carb icing issues with a pancake filter. I used a modified KG type oil bath filter.
Cut the metal tube off and replaced with a flexi. Filter is tucked away down below.......
A 3/4 size filter may fit and be the cheapest solution, although the redline option looks interesting too. Would the 3/4 smaller size filter be more restrictive then what I have? Would I need to adjust carb setting with the smaller filter or the redline option?
David- Hasn't she been to Vince's parties?

Is the filter inside the cabin?Or did you cut a hole in the cabin floor and the filter is drawing fresh outside air like a cold-air set-up?
There's always the whale tail solution too. CRHemi may still have one for sale. Room for oil cooler and third brake light too.
Here is the set up on my CMC. The grill had to be ground back a little for the air cleaner to fit.

LOL!
I think the least expensive way to go (and least amount of work) would be the Red Line air cleaner extension.

Then, I'd cover the bottom of the grill opening with something, just in case you're caught in a rainstorm.
I wouldn't get fancy with the air filter-just mount it to the fan shroud. A cone filter would work fine.
By the way, how does the engine run with the center mounted carb? I've heard they're a bitch to tune properly.
If your car is only running so-so this may be a good time to go with a set of dual carbs.

I like the redline. Will also look attractive and professional with the hood opened or closed.
What was that girl that had all the problems with hers and the hub caps. She had a funcky setup with the single carb. Maybe someone can help find that photo.

Her name was Annaliese. I couldn't find any pics in her file.
Annaliese came into our internet lives and charmed us. Then she dumped us for something cooled with water.

That car would look great with a 914 T-top
Annaliese probably left because she was bored with all you grease monkeys talking
about your cars constantly....She wasn't the only one who left....
Yeah, that's strange alright. Guys on a car site, talking about cars. Huh. My recollection of Anneliese is that she put 600 miles on her car, and never knew how to open the deck lid. Then she blamed Kirk for not living up to his promises. Go figure.
maybe she ran off with sniper from pelican parts?
Annalise now lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba, married and has twins with Burton Cummings second son.
And for those not familiar how nice looking she is, google images for annalise speedster and scroll down a bit on the left side. Vinny would drool over the tats....It's late now...I just want to hit that pillow.
Hubba Hubba....She was real easy on the eyes.....
But I guess MOST members here only care about the "356" experience....
Right Jack?
very sad indeed.....
She lost her limited following after dropping her silicone discussion
Fake too? ah Scheiße
Nothin wrong with fake Wolfgang. We all know that.
I thought it was a tube that had a cone K&N filter on the end, attached to the top of the fan shroud. Anyway. Hope you find a fix.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I do like the Red Line option, unfortunately it still doesn't give me the clearance I need for the new grill to fit without modification (needs to be under 2"). So I'm just going to grind out the grill a bit as the PO did and run with my current setup. Now on to finding the deck lid release cable and getting ball joints replaced.

I didn't add any further ventilation other than the stock engine bay grille.......Its not any different to the stock KG setup.
On grinding the grille, I had to do some clearance on the underside of the grille with the pancake filter I was using originally.
