I just removed the cool aluminum shifter housing, shifter and shift knob assembly from my SC. I yoinked the inner floor bracket, shift rod support, collar, and shift rod as well.

Pretty much everything that would be needed to use a genuine '64 SC shifter in a Speedster/Cabrio replica. The end of the shift rod looks as though it will accept the VW coupler perfectly, worst case, you could just attach the tip of the VW shift rod to the 356 rod and . . . done!

If anyone's seriously interested I'll cut out the shifter mounting portion of the "tunnel" as well, making the conversion even easier. A little measuring, cutting, and welding and the illusion is complete.

For the final touch, I can remove the umbrella handle-style emergency brake assembly/mechanism and you can get rid of the VW floor mounted piece.

This would be really cool for a nice Convert or Cabrio, where the illusion is possible and a plush interior is the norm, but maybe too much trouble for a Speedster . . . I would think.

If you're not into cutting and welding, I might be convinced to gut out the shifter housing so it would slip OVER the stock VW piece. It would be little more than an aluminum cosmetic cover, hiding the stock beetle shift collar, but with the allen head screws in place, the boot and such, nobody could really tell that it wasn't a functioning 356 assembly . . . a cool, original looking and easlly accomplished deception.

Crap . . . . I may just do that myself !

I can take some pictures of all the bits and pieces later next week if anyone's interested.
