Most used Intermeccanicas - the new kind on a factory made tube frame - go for around $35,000 and up.  They are pretty well water tight, with electric windows, and options up the wazoo.

They aren't cheap, but many consider them to be the best 356 replica.

I haven't seen one as low as $35,000 in a while.  Expect to pay 40k plus for a modern Intermeccanica.

There is one pre-owned on Intermeccanica's site right now for $68,500

I might be interested in this. I'd like to use the back "seat" for a young kid or two when the top is up for a short to breakfast or school here and there. How much work would it take to convert your rear tray into a seat?

It's held in with 4 screws and 2 brackets. You can remove the panel in about 2 minutes and 20 seconds (with a beer in one hand), the rear jump area is carpeted.
Or you can go the luxury route and get a whole new matching seat for about $200 from Vintage Speedsters.

Good deal, RMAC! There's quite a few of us in the area. I'm up in Auburn. You have Mitch and Ron in Fair Oaks and Mike in Rocklin to name a few.

You should plan on joining us for the mini Tour d'Hoe Saturday, 9/10. More info in the Events section. We have a great mechanic up here as well. Anthony has a shop in Auburn that specializes in Porsche and Volkswagen. He's worked on most of our cars in the area.

I'm always up for a spirited drive if you're so inclined...

While it is true that used IM's are not as common.

Once you get near the bottom of the older used ones, I am not talking of the older than 1984 IM you have to remember that you will have to refurbish all sorts of stuff on the car. Even cars that have been used for 3K miles are not exempt.

My recommendation is to wait till you find one equipped like you would like and hopefully you find one that does not need so much in refurbishing.

All things keep going up it seems and at times you can get it just before the price jumps in the market.  You have a better chance of getting one sorted if it goes through IM themselves.

Got it home safely.

Get ready Sacramento area speedster owners. I'm going to need a lot of help in the beginning.

First up is seat belts for the back tray. If you know any locals that can weld, let me know. I need to whip up something safe to bolt into underneath, please let me know.

rmac; (is there a name we can call you?)

You can buy 1/8' aluminum bar at Home Depot, et al. As I recall it comes in 1 foot increments and 1.5" wide.  This will make  great backing plate.

I do not know about VS's, but my CMC is built with thick layer of fiberglass and resin. In my years of experience working on sailboats, mounting high load equipment, ie turning blocks, sail track, etc. I never saw a failure., installing hardware in this manner. In fact I'd trust this over the thin metal shell in a VW pan, with large fender washers.

Just one guy's opinion.

I sent you a pm, please check.

Respectfully I am going to give you my opinion.                                                                   IMHO steel is the only material I would trust my kids lives with even so,  I would't trust it securing a seat belt as an anchor plate against fiberglass.                                                     You or someone will be doing the work anyway so doing it right by having steel cross bar welded in under the seat base will give you a proper seat bealt anchor point and peace of mind.
