I have posted most of the following BS separately but I thought I would put it together as we seem to have the same issues with our type 1 engines and the following mods have helped the drivability of my 1914 cc considerably. I hope I don't jinx  myself by doing so.

1.Cutting 4 inch air holes in the inner fenders (.Already had the hole that Vintage puts in the firewall.) I always felt that the carbs were starved for air and the engine for cooling air. When we adj. the carbs the deck lid is open  and when closed  less air-hence richer. Now I don't get that richness  smell with lid closed. Also the engine runs cooler. I attached the  supplied oil temp gauge to sump and it gets up there (no numbers) when I run 70mph on 90 degree days but the one I added to the top of the block runs about 200 degrees. The CHT gauge on #3 never goes above 350. I put screens over the holes to keep out debris and I have covers but have not used them.

2. Velocity stacks -Danny P. insisted I get them-they smoothed down the idle and also improved the acceleration. Idle stays consistent. Not perfect but much better. I used the short stacks because they fit inside the K&N air cleaners. With 1914 and stock tranny I won't win any drag races but have more than adequate power for acceleration and passing in 3rd and 4th.

3. Crankcase breather system- both valve covers and original crankcase breather hose. Use one aircleaner cover to create suction.Doesn't  blow oil out anymore and no case leaks yet(never had any).

It took a lot of time and miles to become satisfied but now at 15,000 miles its good!
