My engine builder recommends the Fram HP 1 oil filter for my engine. I questionned him on this, as I have heard a lot of negative comments about Fram filters declining in quality over the last few years, but he said he felt the HP-1 was still a good filter.

Has anyone had any experience with the HP 1 filter? The only alternative I can find is a K&N 3001 filter.

Thanks.

The Fram HP1 "isn't what it used to be". It was originally created for use on Ford hipo 289 V8 and similar engines, but Fram quality has gone down a lot in the last 25 years. There have been a lot of posts on the CLF about various filters, filter burst problems, etc.

If your oil pressure is high enough to burst most filters something is probably wrong inside the engine (sticking pressure relief valve, etc.).

K&N, AMSOIL, And Mobil1 filters are supposed to be the best on the market for both filtering and strength, but the German filters (available from VW dealers) are also very good.
I have been using HP1 filters for the last 15 years on HiPo VW motors that would normally explode a light duty filter. You obviously don't want your pressure too high. The HP1 has ,for me at least, always done the job to my satisfaction.

I also have an Oberg filter which is a cleanable filter that will screen out even finer particulate. A little more costly but they are awesome.

Check out Ebay there are a few on there now.

There at lots of options out there.

I rebuilt a 65 C engine way back in '76 and installed a "Rapid Cool" oil cooler mounted across the fan intake. Yea, I know, but it was the hot set-up "back in the day". I was parked in downtown Palo Alto, pissed at the then girl friend, and I was going to show her just how pissed I was. It was a cold winter night and the car had been sitting for 5-6 hours. As I rev'd it up, droped the clutch I heard a loud noise that sounded like someone had slapped my rear fender. I stopped and found the oil filter can on the street. Turns out all I showed the girl friend was what an idiot I was and what a lot of oil looks like when it is in a big puddle on the street.

I fixed it by installing a different set of pressure relief springs in the oil passages. But Im sure you have already done that.
