A friend of mine here in the Charleston area has a Speedster project that he has realized he is probably not going to get in the shape he wants.  He's got a few years under his belt and decided he doesn't want any more projects.  Besides, he has a Boxter, a beautifully restored Austin Healey BJ8, and a gorgeous Triumph TR8 convertible.  This car appears to be a CMC that is in decent shape, only needed what appears to be minor work to be road worthy.  I haven't seen it in person yet, but plan to go by his place this weekend.  Here is the text of a couple of emails I received from him:

Lane,

The engine was built at Woosley's Garage during March and April of 1987. The car showed 12,000 + miles at the time. It now shows 20,400 miles.  I would like to tell you what was done to the engine and go from there.  The displacement is between 1756 cc and 1775, 69 mm counter weighted crank, 90.5 slipper tube pistons, 041 modified head 40mm intake - 35.5mm exhaust, Bug Master c35 grind crank, deep sump, heavy duty oil pump, heavy duty cam followers, engine balanced at Simons. Let's talk at Cars & Coffee Saturday.

Thanks,

Ed

Lane,

These are the repairs that are needed to put the car back on the road:

Have generator repaired or replaced ( not charging properly).

Left IDF40 Weber carb leaking gas.

Convertible top needs to be secured to header rail (coming apart).

Wind Shield is cracked and needs to be replaced, however, it is secure.

I can think of several improvements that I would make in time but at one's leisure.

Give me a call if you would like to see it, hear it run, or drive it around the yard. I am afraid if I start working on it, again I will decide not to sell. As you know, my garage is full and I am trying to get away from projects at my age.

Cheers,

Ed

He wants $7500.  Pictures below.

ASSESSMENT UPDATE:

Ok, so Mike Lempert and I went over to Ed's house today and looked the car over.  It's exactly as Ed says, with the cosmetics being pretty good, although in need of a freshening.  Here is a summary:

  • Ed bought the car in '87 from the previous owner.  He has the original CMC paperwork and 2 complete copies of the manual.
  • The car is built on a '74 Beetle chassis and is titled as that year VW.
  • This is an IRS (versus swing-axle) car with 4-wheel drums.
  • The car still has the original gelcoat except for the engine lid which had a repaint due to some damage.  It has a moderate shine to it, but could shine up nicely with some work.
  • The trim is generally in good shape except for the side strip that is chrome plated plastic, and which is beginning to peal.  It could be replaced or just removed altogether.
  • Need new taillight lenses as the current ones have faded to clear.  They're also on the wrong side so they're upside down.  Easy fix.
  • Needs a new windshield.
  • The gap at the rear of the doors widens a bit at the top, so the new owner will probably want to do the CMC butt-sag fix.
  • Hubcaps have a few dents and should be replaced.
  • Interior is in decent shape overall, but one door speaker needs replacement and some carpet needs re-gluing.
  • Currently fitted with a Bugpack shifter, but he has the original.
  • The car did start and run, but hadn't started in a while, so it wasn't smooth.  Based on what Ed has told me, I expect the engine is sound internally, but needs some attention.  The driver's side Weber 40IDF carb leaks badly, so both should probably be rebuilt.  That is likely the main reason for the rough running.
  • There is one opening in the engine tins that needs to be filled in.  This is right below the leaking carb, and I should have asked if that was to let the leaking gas out, but I didn't think to do so.
  • Nasty weather was moving in so we didn't take it for a drive, but the brakes, clutch, shifter, and steering felt good so far as I could tell at a standstill.
  • Since it hasn't been driven in a while, you'll want to rebuild or replace the brake hydraulics.
  • For some reason I forgot to ask to put the top up.  Knowing Ed it should be in good shape.  Tonneau looks good as do the side windows.
  • Wiring could use some cleanup, but everything we tried worked.

Please contact me via dialog if you want Ed's contact information.  He cleared me to give y'all his email to get the conversations started.

If I think of anything else, I'll add it here.

They are one in the same. Only difference now is that Mike has a bit more Grey hair as you can see on BJs Auctions vs the above pic. I hope he`s not on this site!! He`s always been an LBC (Little British Car) & Alfa Lover.  As you can guess he`s had some Austin Healeys in the past but now I believe its more "Spridgets & MGBs".
