front brake job

I have never worked on drum brakes before, what parts do I need to tackle my front drums? I pretty much cooked them coming down the mountain.

How can I figure out what year VW they are from? Are there differences I can spot visually?

If you have a ball joint front end, and drum brakes, you probably have parts used by VW from 1966 through 1974+. Disc brakes, I' not sure of the type used by your builder, But Beck Used to use(?) '74 Ghia units....

Cooked them? Ball joint front end with 4 ('67-73) or kingpin with 5 bolt wheels (55-67)? Wheel adapters for wide 5 or Porsche pattern (check type front end)? New or rebonded shoes, if they are now leaking then wheel cylinders or rebuild kits, perhaps new springs and retainers. Drums might have to be turned if no longer round or they are grouved. Good time to repack the wheel bearings --- better yet up date to discs (~$300) and stainless steel braided lines (~75). Really though the drums should have been adequate unless really abused. Oh and new brake fluid (qt) and spray brake cleaner.
