Russ, there is no single answer that works for every car owner. All of the answers above are true, even though they may conflict with each other. To be in strict compliance with CA Vehicle Code, all vehicles need to display both front and rear license plates. However, this may be the single, most-ignored Vehicle Code section in CA. I think it spoils the looks of a clean front end, as do many of my fellow hobbyists.

I ignored the front plate law on previous builds, and will do so again on a future build. As I have done in the past, I will keep the unmounted front plate in the trunk in case I am stopped and questioned. You will need to make your own, informed decision.
