Front license plate is it necessary or against the law

Hi gang, just got some personalized license plates for my 2002 Vintage speedster. Is it necessary or the law to put the front plate on? I would hate to get pulled over just because of lack of front plate. Thks Russ

It's state by state, but you're in California, so it's the law, I believe.

Where is the best place to mount the front license plate then?

Forgetaboutit! I'm near Sacramento.... No front plate for over 5 years and 30K miles.

Russ, there is no single answer that works for every car owner. All of the answers above are true, even though they may conflict with each other. To be in strict compliance with CA Vehicle Code, all vehicles need to display both front and rear license plates. However, this may be the single, most-ignored Vehicle Code section in CA. I think it spoils the looks of a clean front end, as do many of my fellow hobbyists.

I ignored the front plate law on previous builds, and will do so again on a future build. As I have done in the past, I will keep the unmounted front plate in the trunk in case I am stopped and questioned. You will need to make your own, informed decision.

Thanks Jim, I will do the same. My Speedster is parked at my vacation house on the central coast (CA.) and very rarely gets driven. I would just hate doing a little wine tasting then having some cop stop me for not having a license plate on the front. I guess it is a gamble that I hope I win.

I am trying to figure out a way to attach front plate to nerf bar. Anyone with nerf bars in front with a license plate bracket of some sort? If so, would like to see pictures.

Kirk at Vintage Speedsters has a bracket for mounting a plate to a nerf bar. It's pretty simple and just requires drilling two holes in the flat portion of the nerf bar. Give him a call if you really want to have a plate on the front.
