Bought retirement condo in FL so won't be needing. This should keep you toasty even with top down. Measure 20" long and 6" round (+ electical hump). $125 + shipping.

This is the larger BN2 VW OEM gas heater used in the T2 bus and Thing. This one has a 211 # and ducting for the bus. Includes exhaust pipe (2 sections that screw together), electric gas pump and sediment filter. I have the lighted green control knob -- but NOT the switch itself (you see alot of switches without knob on SAMBA). Never run or tested - stored in garage for some 20 years.

Wolfgang....9:35AM EST Sunday 10/5...consider it sold if you still have. Here in Maine, I need all the heat I can get. Confirm you'll sell it to me and I'll payPal you tonight when I get home. Did you also happen to score a manual with it?

Wolfgang, I had done a forum search a while ago on gas heaters and there are alot of posts...some from you back a few years ago. Did you ever install the BN2 or BN4 in your car? Did you ever end up buying parts from the two places you mentioned ( Scotty or the NJ guy )? Do you know if the BN4 will fit under the hood, or -- more likely where it's a 6" diameter -- on the jump seat / rear shelf?
Any install advice would be great so I don't try to reinvent the install, but quite a few posts on the fSOG forum. I'll jump out and check on the switch availability on the Samba, but the other two sources might have it as well?
On a whole other topic: where did you end up buying your retirement condo in FL? Garage / covered parking for the speedy? I hear that it's a buyers market with housing prices way down in FL?

I'm in the process of installing a BN2 in mine. I cannot believe how much heat they put out!!

Thxs Wolfgang...box it up and give me the total w/Shipping so I can PayPal it to you ( South Portland ME 04106 ). You have the green knob, but do you also have the wiring harness that connects between the switch and the heater? Looks like a bunch of wiring involved. Look at the Samba, you'll see the 1st one if you search on "gas heater": he has a pic of all the wiring + the switch ( but no safety relay ..apparently sold the safety relay...) for $95.
I'll go back and look on the SOG forum to find the on-line gas heater manual that someone listed to help me with the install.

Doug - I'll put your name on it, THXs! I'll do a rough weight estimate on bathroom scale and round up a shipping box. It seems to me that it would just fit under hood (if electrics could be angled forward - but leaves little room for any heat shields which original Thing had around exhaust. I did have a smaller BN2 but sold it too. My thought was to put it up under dash ahead of the steel cross member (up high) -- or cut out area behind rear seat above trans axel and build steel box for there (fellow with BN2 did that). Up behind dash might be too noisy. It would easily fit on rear shelf -- perhaps camouflaged as old piece of luggage lined with steel.
Condo is in Mary Ester FL (Ft Walton/Pensacola area) - 1/2 mile out side Hurlburt Field (Marine Spl Ops - Hoorah!) Yup did manage to get a garage (not sure if will hold Speedie and dune buggy (below) - not my BAJA's though) and boat slip with it. Waiting on seller's IRS leins to be discharged to close. FL real estate market is real shambles. Hurricane insurance is real killer (I'm 4th floor in concrete & steel building though!).
There are a couple switches on SAMBA now - one for $35 without the green knob that I will supply and one for $40 for whole switch. Never bought parts from heater guys - they seem to want a premium (guess they have market cornered).

Doug--you can find the wiring diagram online--easy. There is not much wiring at all--just supply 12volts, ground and fuel. The power to the indiviul "subsystems" is passed on through the heater (power to the fuel pump, fan etc). When you first take a look at it the usual issue is the fuel pump-it just gets sticky from sitting. It's a diaphram type (on most of them), take it apart, clean it, lube it---good to go. Good luck with it.

Bruce, thxs for the reply. From what I can tell / read, the switch itself seems to have a "sensor- rheostat" that acts like a temp switch on an A/C unit and turns the unit on/off to the desired temp level? Looks like you rotate the switch to increase the duration the unit stays on? So it would seem that just running it on then off by interupting the power would make the unit run - generates heat, but doesn't regulate it from low to high or auto temp sensing?
But I have never seen one working let alone had one "in my hands" or seen a manual, so I appreciate all the source info SOG can provide.
Have you used one or have / had one in your car?

I know that a BN-2 works by being either on or off, no thermostat. I don't know about the BN-4. Do an online search for Eberspacher BN-X. There are installation instructions, user manuals, and wiring diagrams available. I looked into this for my Spyder(thanks Tom Dewalt!!!) I have a BN-2 that I will be going through. PLEASE BE CAREFUL! Test it away from anything and outdoors, and make sure you have a fire extinguisher rated for gasoline next to you. You just need 12V and a small gas can, maybe a hose in a quart-size oil bottle for testing. I am not worried about a thermostat as a Spyder is always open anyway. I plan to mount mine in the front beam area, outside of the cockpit. Easy to run fuel line that way, and the intake and exhaust air will be easy, just need to run a warm air duct into the car.

careful about the exhaust ports on these. Search TS. incorrectly mounted, wind turbulence (you need to follow specific details regarding the exhaust) can put out the flame and screw up the insides.
The exhaust on one I have has a special end with a 45 degree flap welded in to prevent back pressure plus the pipe is cut with a triangular slot. You can see it in both pictures.
that thing is scary looking....looks like the motor on top of the V1 buzz bombs the krauts used against england..
