FL retiree here.  I could buy an old Airstream and get lots of practice!  I have old set of 914 2L alloys that I got cheap on CL ($120 for 4 but no lug nuts).  I stripped added black paint and anodizing using Easy Off.  Then used WD sandpaper, Carlisle sourced buffing wheels, jewelry rouge, and Mother wheel polish.  WOW what a lot of work - and they are still only presentable.  I've seen big buffers at truck stops - that has to be secret but still many hours of labor.  And does that aluminum dust ever make a mess on your hands!

I've seen 4 lug Mahles and Pedrinis polished like chrome too!  Even more work as they are rough castings to start with.

I refinished mine with about the same stuff as Wolfgang - started with 100 grit sanding tips using a drill with a cable drive, then 120 sandpaper (lots of it) and lots more tips and worked my way up to 2000 grit paper and cable driven buffing wheels of various shapes to fit into the many nooks and crannies - Oh, and LOTS of polishing compound.

I tried the EZ-Off, but the anodizing on my wheels just laughed at it so I had to grind the stuff off.  Total time PER WHEEL was 6-8 hours.

I went with a fully polished set of spokes and a satin black background.  Looking at his photos, I like the satin finished spokes, but don't quite know how I would get that look and make it consistent with the tools I have.

After all that work, I don't think his prices are all that high, and he's in line with other Fuchs restorations I've seen.

Certainly is a great FLA retirement job, though.
