...so I just got done filling the tank when I spotted this hot looking woman walking up to me. I'm thinking great, she wants to talk about my car. Instead, she states "hey mister, you leaking gas". I look down a see I'm standing in a puddle of gas. It's pouring gas from the end of the vent drain. I got a pair of vice grips to pinch it off to get it home.

The drain appears to be a direct line from the tank through the fender. I don't think I over filled the tank because when I look in the tank, I can't see the gas level (or touch it). The nipple (?) coming out of the tank is several inches below the fill hole.

Isn't there supposed to be some sort of valve there? If I continue to let the gas drain out the vent line, will it stop once the gas level get lower than the nipple or have I developed a siphon?

Appriciate any help.

Bob,
I had the same problem as well as a very strong gas odor in the garage. I added a large loop in in the vent hose and a $5.00 one way valve at the end of the tube inside the wheel well. No more problems. I found that the one way valve would actually allow a small amount of air through the valve in the wrong direction with high pressure applied, which should head off over-pressureization of the gas tank. This site and the "wizards" here supplied all the info needed . I can take no credit for this simple (and cheap) fix. Happy motoring, Al
Seems all the Alan's are jumping in on this one !!
I had a lot of fuel spill,, especially on left hand turns,, when the fuel would all slosh over to the vent side of the tank. The long vent hose went down to the ground (through the fender well), and it had one loop at the top. So on each corner,, the line would fill, and then spray at least that much back on the under-car. I would caution my passengers not to smoke !! ;-)

Anyway,, I fixed the problem by cutting off the line, near the top of the wheelwell,, and installing an ATV vent valve (about $15). I kept a large loop in the ventline right at the filler neck. Works great !! Ok,, everyone light up !!
