Depends what sending unit you have... My 2013 VS came with the Standard Bettle VDO -

- VDO advertises the std Bettle replacement part sending unit as 10ohm empty, 65ohm full. ( from their web site)

-  cip1 advertises the same VDO unit as they measured it ( I called, they told me they measured in-house using their own ohm meter)- 10 ohm empty, 75 ohm full.

- Palo Alto speedo measured mine while it was in for service at 5ohm empty, 65 ohm full.

..... Kind of a crap shoot... But I would not expect these cars/ old beetles to be as accurate as modern cars.

The difference between 65 and 75 full is the width of the needle, as measured by Palo Alto speedo when experimenting whit my new gauges.  Not significant.

cheers,

Before you get too crestfallen about the close but different resistance ranges shown above, you fine-tune your sender to the gauge head by bending the float arm on the sender to show empty somewhere around 1/8 tank or just above "R", and full at "4/4" or so.  Trial and error works here and it may take you bending the arm a few times to tune it in.  Very 1960's, that.

I install the float are as Gordon said, it gives you a bit more available fuel than the gauge reads.

FYI:  When installing new float assembly I measure the VW tank depth, divide by 2 and set the arm pivot at that measurement. The float arm should raise up to even to the underside of the float tank plate .....You can check the operation of the float reading the gauge as you move the arm but you need to use extreme caution and avoid any spark.  __________  DO SO ONLY with something covering the tank opening to avoid gas fumes and blowing up your garage _________
