My engine was built by the PO back in the late 90's with a single relief case. He used an EMPI stock cooler by-pass adapter that sends oil to the cooler and back. I have no stock cooler. He also used an EMPI "full flow" oil pump cover with an oil filter boss on the end for a spin on filter. I've heard that these don't filter all of the oil, but most of it I guess. I have 17,000 miles on this set-up so far. My oil temps rarely reach 210, ever. Don't know why they don't or can't be full flowed. I guess that's how they did it back in the day with these cases.

These kind of sites often supply overly simplistic info but can give easy to understand descriptions. Here's one for the single vs. dual oil pressure relief considerations; http://www.ehow.com/info_7945876_single-dual-relief-vw-engine.html

and here's another that deals with full flow filtration out of the pump cover: http://www.dune-buggy.com/techtips/fullflow/

sounds like Gene Berg and braided stainless lines ought to be part of a plan, KW.
I don't think you'll need a puller for the pump - once the cover is off the gears slide right out. Maybe a magnet to make sliding them out easier. The hardest part of it can be getting your crank pulley off.
You want a 30mm socket for the crank pulley nut, and it's nice to have one of those little flywheel locker things.

I'm liking those Maxi-pumps. They didn't have such goodies in my VW days 40 years ago. Ya, #3 easiest to use for us, but no hoseclamp oil lines to a filter - that's a Murphy failure - it can fail so it will.
It should look like a piece of steel channel with a threaded rod through it connected to a flat steel plate / bar.... With the gears out of the pump, the plate / bar slips inside the pump body and the channel straddles the pumps outter diameter.... As you tighten the nut on the rod, the pump is pulled from the engine case.....
I guess my post wasn't so clear. I was thinking about how I used to pull my pump using my fingers once I'd figured out a magnet to get the gears out. A newer engine or closer tolerances could make a puller for the pump a plus but mine used to practically fall out once the oil suction let go of the gears.

Sorry about that KW.
