On 356's The hinges were ratchet -type, lift once = locked, lift slightly again = release. Inexperienced gas station attendants (and some new owners) often forgot or didn't know the procedure. That's why most 356's and a lot of VW beetles had their hoods "tweaked".
The area where the hinges bolt onto the original hoods is also a water trap, so VERY often you see cracked or repaired inner bracing in that area. If the water didn't trap there it ran down to the latch area and rotted the nose of the hood right off.
