I have a fairly new VS speedster, and over the last couple weeks started noticing a strong gas smell in my garage. I poked around the engine compartment, and the foam gasket that surrounds the engine 'tray' was soked with gas on the left side, and the left side carb appeared to have gas leaking put of it. Needless to say the bottom of the engine was coated with it as well. I popped off the air filter ad the was a fair amount of gas in the carb, but it drained when I opened the throttle. Could it be leaking from the gasket that is joins the upper and lower parts of the carb (they are Webers)? Anybody have any suggestions before I call the mechanic? I really don't want to catch on fire on the way there!

Thanks, John

I HOPE that it isn't the float! Around here we've been having a terrible problem with "Summer Blend" gasoline, especially for the boat owners. The fuel additives are affecting the plastic floats in their engines, almost melting them I guess. Hopefully this isn't your problem.
Thanks guys,

The carbs are Webers (they say "Weber, made in Spain"). I tightened all the bolts on it and ran the engine for about 15 minutes, and there was no more leakage, although a drip keep coming out of the fold in the bottom of the heat exchanger. I am going to take it in this week (with a fire extinguisher in my lap) and I will let you know what happens.
I had this problem with my dellortos 40mm, which are a lot like webers.
After a drive when the engine was hot, the gas had a tendency to "boil" in the standard vw fuel pump and thereby expand and create enough pressure to open the needle valves and overflow the carbs. This resulted in gas dripping in to the cylinders which is bad. Ruins the oil.

According to the guys on thesamba.com,this is a common problem.
Exchanging now to an electric fuel pump mounted under the gas tank.
Still waiting for the mail man though.

Check your engine at standstill when its hot. I could actually hear the fuel bubbling in the system.

Sorry for my english. Hope it makes sence....
