I agree with you. That's why I was asking. I thought maybe a stock VW might get 35 around town and close to 40 hwy. I once had a 1967 1500 bug. No one cared about mileage then. Let's face it, the air cooled VW engine are not the most efficient things going. Even the old Speedster 1600s data give 20-25 gas mileage. I have a 1992 Toyota V-6 4x4 truck, and it gets 25 on the highway.

No offense intended. I have a 02 Passat wagon 1.8 turbo that gets about 28 - 30 on regular and cruises at 85+mph and is quiet as can be. VW made a thing of driving beauty when they designed that car. The newer Passats are not so good though.

In San Diego with my 1776cc speedster D and standard transaxle gearing I almost get run over by everyone unless its bumper to bumper and I can't imagine going to a smaller engine. If you have a lot of open road and not much traffic in AZ I can see your point.

BTW I am on my third tank of gas. 1st tank was 15MPG lots of idleing and street driving. 2nd tank 20MPG a little more freeway driving. 3rd tank is work in process.

Paul, I have a 2424 cc engine. If I put my small idle jets in, I get a dramatic difference in mileage. I have a set for the commute, netting me between 28 and 30 mpg, and the larger set which get me somewhere in the 15-20 range.
My only pain in the butt is balancing the carbs when I switch jets. You'll get the hang of it pretty quickly; takes about twenty minutes, start to finish.
Just a thought.

Dual 40 Webers will work from a 1600 up to a 2000 or so, no problem. If I keep my foot out of it(yeah right!) I can get over 30 mpg. That is a 1400 lb. Spyder, 2165cc, 3.44:1 final drive. Around town, lots of full throttle accel to 80, about 21.5 mpg. The price we pay for fun......
