I know we have discussed this before but can not find details. This is an intermitent problem. Sometimes engine runs well and then it will sputter and jerk as i drive down the road. I have so far replaced fuel filter and checked the spark plugs and they all seem to be fine....thought i had bad gas and ....nope not that. I'm thinking is there a filter in the bottom of the gas tank that needs to be replaced. I have narrowed it down to the gas because it does not do it all the time sometimes it runs just fine and then it will not idle very well.....any thoughts will be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hey!!!

I'm kinda having the same problem....

Sometimes when idling car vibrates or shakes more than usual.

I think I've narrowed it down to some small dirt that is in one of my carbs.

So I might have to get it cleaned out properly.....

Apparently these webers or carbs are very sensitive to any dust etc....

Any one out there have any suggestions???
George is the carb guy around here -- hopefully he will add his two cents -- but I would say a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. By that I mean remove your gas tank and either have someone clean and coat the inside of your tank, or else go to aircooled.net and buy the POR-15 gas tank treatment kit and DIY. Clogged jets make your car annoying to drive; deal with it upstream at the potential source and replace all filers downstream. Shine a flashlight into the gas feed of your tank and see if you see a lot of crud floating around.
There is a filter in a stock VW tank; your tank may or may not have one. If it has this filter and runs well when the tank is FULL, then has problems when the tank is LOW, you probably need to replace the filter and clean/seal the tank to keep rust, paint particles, or whatever from clogging up the screen (junk in the tank is less likely to clog the filter when the tank is full).

A replacable metal cannister filter up front between tank and fuel pump works best; my car was built with one and I've never had any problems with idle jets clogging or junk in my carbs.

It's best not to use a plastic or glass filter in the engine compartment as they can be a fire hazard.
