So, as some of you may know, I'm in the sorting stage with my Beck. Plenty of things are not 100% at the moment. Gas mileage is one of them. In order to more accurately determine my mileage, fill-ups at the pump can be dubious due to the vapor tripper on individual nozzles. One pit stop might be 4 gallons, the next 5, the next 4.4 etc. But really, how accurate is it? Since peering down into the gas tank is somewhat difficult, and holding a match over it is definitely out of the question, I was wondering if anyone has a good (safe) idea for the "definitive" fill-up level on a tank? I've thought of a simple stick down the opening and checking for the level, but will quick evaporation negate that process and "erase" the fill level. Also, is plunging something down into the tank a wise idea? I may be over thinking this but maybe some of you might have an obvious answer or solution that I'm not aware of.

Obviously as you noted, you can't strike a match and look at the fuel level, but how about a penlight? I always fill my tank by eyeballing the level, no light necessary. That seems to work fine. I keep track of my mileage from fill up to fill up, but for the best results I average the mileage over a long trip, like to Carlisle and back.
