You can bend the arm and get it to offer more feed back.  Suspect it still will be slow to go down and then drop suddenly since tank is odd shaped (or other way around).  Others just use speedometer Odo and pull in for more gas after say every 200 miles.  That said there is a better sending unit than the arm with a float.  It's used on later Karmann Ghias ('67-73), early Transporters and the Porsche 914 (not sure if 914 is compatible with old gauges).  $50. Still not sure it would give a linear reading though.
