There is a sending unit with a single blade connector next to the distributor. Is this for the oil pressure idiot light or the oil temp gauge? I need to connect both the light & temp gauge, so it looks like I'm missing a sender somewhere

Normaly that is for oil pressure on a type 1 block....

Yeah, that's what I thought. Just ordered the VDO temp sending unit for the oil relief plug.

Actually, VDO offers a sender with two terminals - one for the gauge needle and the other for the light. I'm running one, but there doesn't seem to be any identifying number on it.

You can use a brass fitting (VDO makes one) and 2 senders or a single sender with 2 connectors.
