Gauges back feeding....or so I thought,
Replaced the OEM VW wiper switch in my VS with a simple aftermarket 3 position switch. Then the games began.
The directional indicator glowed when the signal switch was in the center - off position as well as the alt. light had a slight glow. Ahh, suspected a loose ground connection. Pulled all three gauges and checked each ground connection and the main dash ground at the column...nada . Decided to fire the motor and see what happened only to find that if I turned the directional switch on, the tach would jump wildly ...hmmmm. I go back and again check all grounds as this is what usually happens with an open ground only to discover a red wire off the power side of the gauges flapping in the breeze, I had to consult a VS wiring diagram to find that when I had replaced the wiper switch this red went to the hot on the switch to power the gauges. So, the gauges were back feeding on the positive side, that is a first for me. ~Alan
