I just bought another 4 cylinder bug motor to put in the car until the 911 motor is rebuilt. I have no idea what year it is or anything.

I'm a little lost with the generator wiring. The generator has 3 prongs on the top, which are unlabeled, as well as a stud labeled "B+" (i know what that one is). I played around with a volt meter with the engine running, and it appears that the generator needs a voltage regulator, which I have. However, I cannot figure out how this regulator hooks up to this generator. The old one worked fine.

Any help you can offer is appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam

Adam, I wish I could scan and post a diagram but I can't. The Bentley VW Service Manual from '70 - on has clear wiring diagrams in the Electrical Section that tell you exactly which wire goes where. At least in mine, it says that the generators have connectors labeled as D+ and DF. The book also says to be careful not to interchange wires DF and D+ or B+ and 61 to prevent damage to the charging system. At least in the Aug '69 through June '71 diagram there's a connection from the D+ and DF terminals in the generator to terminals in the voltage regulator that are labeled the same. The 61 and B+ terminals in the voltage regulator get connected to other wires in the car. The positive terminal of the battery along with another wire coming in from the front get connected to the B+. There's also a brown wire hooked up from a terminal labeled 31 (the larger screw that can be seen on the generator's case). The DF connection wire should be green, the one for terminal 61 should be black and the wire form the positive terminal of the battery to B+ should be red.
Adam, the Bentley book shows how to "excite" (I hope that doesn't sound too porno) the generator. If the engine has been sitting unused for a long time there's the possibility that it needs some excitement...That's what's called polarizing in the website that Wolfgang mentions.
