Hey, New Englanders (and NE wannabes):

The Museum of Transportation at Larz Anderson Park, 15 Newton Street, Brookline, MA  is hosting German Car Day AND the postponed date for "Porschefest" (rained out earlier in the season)

Date:  Aug. 10'th - This coming Saturday

This is always a great event that I often miss because it's usually on Father's day, so I'm hoping to make it this time.  We always have a large group of Tubs there from the local 356 club and there is usually at least one of every Porsche model.

And for those "high rollers" in this group with your own jet (or the more frugal members who utilize "Netjets"), it's best to avoid Logan, so use either Hanscom Field (north of Boston on 128) or Norwood Airport (south of Boston on 128).  Larz Anderson Park is almost exactly in the middle between those two.  Hansom has more facilities, but not by much.

As Ernie Boch says:  Come on Down!

Yeah, well.....this old noggin ain't getting any younger and can't even get my dates straight!!  If you thought it was already over, you missed one hell of a show.

WOW!  Was this ever a crowded show!  There were HUNDREDS of cars there, in picture-perfect New England Autumn weather.  Air temp was a bit on the nippy side when we left the house, around 8:45am, but was light jacket weather for the rest of the day and perfect for wandering around the show field at the Museum of Transportation, just outside of downtown Boston.

I arrived around 9:30 am and was greeted by our local club President, directing show field traffic while wearing his iconic, Red, Bib-front overalls.  Quite the Motorsports fashion statement to be sure, and certainly got your attention when stopping at the registration tent, so much so that I never thought to snap a photo of him.  I had not pre-registered and found that a vast majority of people just showed up like me and they quickly ran out of drive-up registration packets (I never did get one after waiting a couple of hours&hellip

It seems that I got one of the last few parking spots on the main lawn in front of the museum, before the excess was routed to most of the adjoining lawns and farther up above, on the hill overlooking the Boston skyline.  Even the “cheap seats” had a great view at this show.

There were lots of cars from every German manufacturer at this event, and I think that the BMW club of New England emptied all of their garages for this show - there must have been thirty 2002's alone, along with some really exotic stuff like a BMW M1 and black and white, “his and hers” Audi i8s (see photos).  This was really a show well worth going to, if not for the cars alone, then for people-watching, too - I counted at least a dozen different languages being spoken by spectators.

One car in particular has a few more photos in the gallery - a GORGEOUS Pre-A coupe in “Adria Blue”.  This was a fresh restoration that, according to one of our club's more knowledgeable members (and the owner of a 1955 Pre-A Speedster), was THE best car at the show.  We both looked at it for a long while and could find absolutely nothing to fault - it was truly gorgeous and the level of finish had to be seen.

Enjoy the photos - This was one terrific show!!!  Gordon Nichols

You can see today’s photos here:

Just heard that one of our local members (and the guy with the red bibbed overalls) got "Best Porsche" for his tracked, black 356-A Speedster, complete with hard, racing tonneau.  It's the one with the roll bar that has a sticker that says "Loud Pipes Save Lives" and the Rudge chromed-spinner wheels.  I'm surprised that the blue coupe didn't win but then that's why I'm not a judge.

Other thoughts from the show:

Cooling - We should be able to do something like this, given the airflow over the top of the car:

This was a gorgeous old Mercedes, done totally in matt black - and it looked good.  There were a few other cars in matt finishes like peach, red and green:

Yes, that's a carbon fiber hood on a late Mercedes, along with the trunk, the doors and the (upholstered) seats and console.

A real "Convertible D" which the guy moved three times to get out from under a tree, then to get away from a dusty path, and finally to be closer to the 356's and away from a line of GT-3's. In the background, top left of the screen, is Rich's original '55 "Speedsta", the one that I took photos of the dash for Gary (FlatFourFan), Manny over in Angola and Bob for his IM-6 build.  Rich is getting a kick out of the "notoriety"....

Here is Rich and Valerie's '55 - you've already seen the dash on here.  Rich tells me that with the Speedster gearing (mostly designed for the track), on a highway he can maybe see 72mph "with a significant tailwind".  It is quick getting to that 72, though.

OK, One more, of the only OTHER replica at this show, a Beck 550 Spyder, parked near the new Gull Wings:
