Yes, I know it's "Father's Day", but what could be better for a family of "Car Guys" than to go to German Car Day in one of the prettiest parks in the Boston area?

This year, both the Air and Water cooled divisions of Five Cent Racing were in attendance, and three generations, to boot!  And while I had intended to take Pearl - I even (GASP!)  gave her a bath and semi-detailed her (didn't want to over do things), my plans were stymied by really rainy weather that moved in mid-morning and I would have ridden home in a downpour, so we all piled into the Water Cooled Division's 996 and headed to Boston.

Not a lot of photos, but some cute ones of Joshua and his brother, Lucas, in a Messerschmitt micro-car (it IS German, after all) and a shot of Chris' 996 with its' "Lightning McQueen" eyes in place, thanks to the boys.  Pearl has a set, too.....For the next New England event.IMG_0088IMG_0090IMG_0092IMG_0094IMG_0097

I was quite frankly shocked at the number of car owners who asked the boys (who have been well trained not to touch any of the cars as they are looking) if they wanted to sit in the cars.  I was also shocked that, as we were leaving and out on the street, we saw a very new McLaren parked on the side of the road, snuggled in between a couple of BMWs (well, after all......It's simply not German, right?).  People must be more trusting over there in Brookline than I am out here in Grafton on the Frontier.

You sure that Messerschmitt wasn's a replica of the new IM Solo?  It seems very practical with a second row seat. Funny how Germany came back from WW2 war planes with cars!  The Heinkel is cool too (although sure you roast under the canope on a summer day!).  Oooh, louvers on engine lid! Kids more drawn to the micro cars than the $$$ Porsches!  My son still lusts for a Mini after years of a dependable Corolla!

The junior crew chiefs were attracted to four different vehicles:

When we first arrived, Rich MacKoul, with his totally original, white 1955 Pre-A Speedster was already on the show field and Joshua cried out from the back seat of the 996; "Grampa!  Somebody stole your car!"

Later, someone arrived with what they said was a "very early Meyers Manx" (it certainly was not) which was GT looking and even shorter than the Manx's we know, and the boys loved it, probably because it looked like a cheap Hot Wheels car.

Someone rumbled in with a Porsche GT3 mostly set up for the track - Lime Green and white, lots of stickers, loud rumbly exhaust and they thought that was cool.

Lastly, someone arrived in a Mercedes Unimog truck painted bright orange - It looked like a Monster Truck, so, of course, we had to walk to the far end of the lower lawn to see it - And it was awesomely restored to like-new.  Each wheel was 2X each boy.

I was attracted to another car, an early 1980's VW Scirocco that I thought was my late brother's "Vette Killer", but I texted the guy who bought it and he stayed away because of the rain.  Someday we'll get together (he has never seen Pearl) but here's mostly what it looks like for a body style:
