I just have bad luck..

My speedster that i bought has a custom vin for a 1969 vw bug convertible (the pan) well of course the vin number on the title doesnt match that CMC plate under the hood... The plate says "SC1226" and my title reads "c001226" so they wont let me register or even title the car without a corrected Florida Title showing the proper vin number.

WOW..

Anyone know of any of the CMC plates being available anywhere? That i can just make my own?

This is my third car in the last few years that i have had trouble getting titled....

I have a CMC builder's plate. It comes up as a number for an RV.
You want it? It's a couple letters and a five- or six-digit number like you're describing. I (might have gotten and used) a VW title and vin from a (might or not have been a) dead car.
If it'll help you, you can have the plate, gratis. I'll need a mailing address.
Here's an aluminum jobber like he's describing:

Less than fifteen bucks. Wolf, I think I might do that myself. Can I take you up on der schtampa offer, too?
Might like to have the VeeDub number mashed into one of these.

If you're going to go that route, you might want one of these paint code hoobeydoos, too (seven bucks and change):

BTW -- Brian, nothin' but love, dude!
No reason he needs a CMC vin plate. Any vin plate will do. To get the spitter registered, I cut a 2" long piece of sheet metal, pounded the numbers onto it, fixed at the firewall and that was gud nuf fer the DMV folks.

You are required to have a publicly visible VIN. This is so that a police officer etc., can easily determine the VIN without throwing the car on the rack and looking for the hidden VIN. I'm sure there's probably a more legalese term, but that's really what its for. Confirming that THIS is the car you believe it is.

Take the suggestions above. Get a nice looking plate, pound the correct number on it and go for it.

Bruce, keep in mind that the rules change from state to state.
Was your car already registered by the previous owner in NJ? If so, you will not have to go thru a state MV safety inspection before registering your car. If not, there is a multi-page list of items that have to pass the state safety inspection before you get a letter that allows you to register the car.
When I registered my homebuilt Sebring, I had to show them either the original numbered I.D. plate or a photo copy of it.
Also, if you register yours as a VW, you may get away with it or you may not. It is no longer legally considered a VW by the state.
Ebay? Although I am an ebay-a-holic, there are often cheaper sources that offer better service. I like Klasse356 which is 100 miles away from me in PA. Prices are good and service is excellent. Online catalog is flakey though - but email and you'll get prompt price quote from Jim. (I bought a lot of rubber seals, hood badge and gold emblems from him. Good quality - fair price).

EMB17............$7.90 Reutter blank Builder's plate
EMB18............$7.75 Blank car color plate

As far as the vehicle chassis VIN and the builder's CMC id plate. Each state is different on registration process and suspect moving registration title from one state to another. I bought my CMC kit new so have a Statement of Origin (looks like a FL car title) which has a # that matches the CMC aluminum plate. Mine is pan based so also have '70 VW title with # that matches that stamped by the shifter coupler on the floor pan/the windshield VIN plate and the under the hood VIN plate. Have NOT registered yet (since in VA you get to pay Personal Property tax each year on a registered vehicle and mine is not moving from garage yet) but I think I take those 2 titles to VA DMV along with build cost receipts (primarily CMC bill of sale plus VW chassis bill of sale) to get new title and license plates --- then get safety inspecion (unless I get antique plates). I'm not sure what the title will say though "70 VW" or "70 CMC Speedster" (or maybe kit purchase year of '89?). I don't want it to say "07 Porsche Speedster" or anything with current build year (or kit purchase year) in it since that would make every 2 year smog inspection a hassle.

Here's link to the Harbor Freight stamping kit - $9

They will stamp alloy all day long -- hardened steel takes a real wack and suspect they wouldn't last long.

Thanks guys.

Cory , i have a plate but it doesnt match my title. So yours wouldnt do me any good but i wouldnt mind it so i can have a guy make one for me?

My state is an inspection state so they were just doing their job since the title says "c001226" and my CMC plate says "SC1226" its not a match so they told me have florida do a title correction, ect.. But i dont think if previous owner really wants to take the time to do that so im getting a back up plan.

One my employees works at an Awards Shop that makes custom signs, ect.. He thinks he can make a duplicate by scanning the CMC plate then leaving it blank so i can stamp in my own numbers that would then match the title.

The inspection place kept asking me if i built the car, so i think if it comes down to it , i can say i bought all the parts from previous owner ( i have receipts ) and i actually assembled it. Then I would have to get a bond, ect..

I think having a plate that would match my VIN would just make it easier on everyone!!

Cory,

As one last thing, maybe call the Florida DMV and ask why the title had the "c00" preface to the number rather than the "SC."

You MAY get lucky and find out that in Florida the won't allow a VIN to begin with letters, so they replace them with a "c" (for "corrected") and "00" as replacements for the non-acceptable "SC" letters . . .

My '68 Bus had a similar discrepancy between the title and VIN, but the MA DMV wasn't concerned. I guess that at one point in time the state wanted all VIN to be of a certain length and just added zeros to the front of any VIN that had too few numbers. Then, they changed their minds and stopped the practice.

You MAY luck out with just a phone call, then a fax or contact person to verify everything to your own DMV and you're all set . .. MAYBE . . . I HOPE ! ! ! !

Worth a try, anyway. OR possibly just a pretty good explaination to throw at your DMV as a reason for the discrepancy, they might believe you.

Luck,

TC
I love technology..

My employee came over and said that the CMC plate is just engraved and he can make an EXACT duplicate on his machine, of course with my proper number.

Anyone else want a blank one? If he did a run of them instead of just 1 it would be more affordable.

He will probably get it done this week.

I dont need it, i took mine off and am trying to find a usable CMC logo..

Two of me listed? Thats odd.. My wife called me tonight and said someone called her cell phone (our old home phone)

I am going to have plates made, so if you want one with your Vin / Id Number let me know

Cory (Richmond, that is),

I would like to get a CMC plate as well. I have the other paperwork from CMC, just no plate. I think I actually have a CMC plate (with wrong numbers) that Auto Resolutions sent me as a sample. They are the folks that ended up dispercing much of CMC's inventory after they went under.

I'm working out of the country until this weekend. If you can wait, I can get the ID number to you when I get back and send you some cash to go with it. Just let me know.

Thanks,

Bob
