I got my hub caps on (see recent thread about bending wheel clips). Now getting them off is the next issue. I was warned by a mechanic specializing in classic VWs that hubcaps from many aftermarket suppliers have a design flaw. One that’s easy to miss.

The inner lip on OEM hubcaps is rolled over all the way. The inner lip on mine (and maybe yours, too) only rolls over on itself part way, leaving a valley all the way around. And it is this valley that can catch on the end of a clip, thereby locking the hubcap in place.  I got my test hubcap off with some luck and a few small chips of the wheel’s powder coat.

Moral of the story: listen to your mechanic.

I have four-bolt wheels, which grab the hubcap with little 'bumps' molded into the wheel - instead of the clips on wide fives, BUT I always put a rag (folded to two thicknesses) between the pry bar and the wheel when I'm popping off the hubcap.

Of course, this still doesn't prevent scratches on the hubcap when it comes flying off and skitters across the garage floor. I'm thinking about Berber carpeting in the garage.

I have one of those tools, but be forewarned that your finger will hurt a but unless the hubcap is loose.  I found A very large and slightly bent screwdriver that had been left in my car from the build.  If I fit it through the tool with the blade resting on the tire sidewall I can use it as a lever and pop the cap off easily.  The bend in the handle gives it clearance over the hubcap.

If you have the wide 5 hubcaps you need this tool. It's inserted into the two-hole segments around the outer rim of the hubcap. Insert and pull.

I got a similar tool at the local VW auto parts store only it has a wooden handle to grip. Put a towel on the garage floor and presto ...no problemo....
