Getting ready for the long (5,500 kms) trip to drive my IM down to Ontario and wanted some input into what to prepare, look for, bring, etc. I've done this trip many times with my old Benz and I always started with new tires, shocks, filters, brakes (if needed), bearings re-packed (or replaced), new belts, hoses (if needed), check all nuts and bolts, tie rods, etc, etc. The usual suspects. Yes it takes a while to go through the car from front to back but I don't like surprises and I'd often make the trip in 3 1/2 to 4 days..with family on board.

This time its the IM and not the Benz.

So, the list so far is long. Along with the stuff mentioned above I'm doing the 1st gear synchro cause its gone, rewiring the lights with relays up front instead of direct from switch to lights (existing wiring gets pretty hot), adjust the brakes (new shoes & discs/drums already on), adding a center stop light (.99 cents of EBay!), replacing the CV joints and boots (cracked and suspect), fixing/plugging all holes etc in body to frame (there's a couple), putting header wrap on headers and muffler to keep temps down...plus a bunch of stuff I just wanted to do anyway like window crank operated power windows and fabricate a wind stop.

Finally I am going to replace the 911 2.4T engine with a 2.4S engine that I have that has recently been rebuilt. In mating this to the 901 transaxle I have an alum Fidanza flywheel and I'll be getting a ring gear and clutch package from Kennedy Engineering as this seems to be the easiest way to mate up a 915 flywheel to the 901 transaxle. (existing setup is slipping a bit even just with the 2.4T)

So, what else would you do and, remembering that space is at a premium and I will be travelling stretches of hundreds of miles with no services...what would you bring?

And before anyone suggests why don't you ship it...the only carrier that comes into town will absolutely not take a car older than 20 years and my IM is 1986. The only other alternative is to put it on an open (gravel highways remember) flatbed uninsured or enclosed with its four wheels in 4 tires, also uninsured. Then I'd have to arrange and pay for someone to pick it up and transfer it to the rail as the transport companies will only take it to their yards in Edmonton. I'd have to do the same in Toronto and then arrange and pay for someone to take it to Niagara. All in all the cost to ship would exceed my cost to drive it down and fly back...plus I fancy a road trip!

Well, beyond the obvious well-stocked tool box, I think a satellite Phone might be in order, along with a Space Blanket, some matches, a collapsible fishing pole and a gun.

Spares (but you'll know this better than us):Ignition spares, fuel pump, Gas line filter, stuff like that.

Want a re-post of my all-encompassing spares list?

The scariest part of the trip is the couple of hundred of kms from Fort Rae to Fort Providence. (that and the transports on the TransCanada across the top of Ontario at night!!) There they widened the road and made nice pastureland on either side. The buffalo love it by, and on, the highway and these things are bigger than my IM and won't move off the road. You piss them off and they'll charge. Nothing like trying to get through a herd of buffalo in my Benz, let alone the IM. I suspect if I come across a herd on the road I'll just have to wait for a transport then tuck in behind the truck to get through. Those buffalo have totalled more than a few vehicles and they are getting more an more unpredictible.

Not just the buffalo you have to look out for too as they leave damn big buffalo pie on the road too. Hit one of those and you're likely off the highway.

And yes, a report of the spares list would be good.

I have a spare fuel pump (using those Facet pumps)...anyone have any ideas on how to install both such that I could switch from one to the other EASILY if one failed? Could it be just as easy as a T before and after the two pumps and then a switch to switch between the two...or would that present problems with one pump working and the other not and the working pump trying to push fuel back through the non-working pump of some other such thing?
"I have two pumps mounted on the pass. side below the tank."
Perfect idea Bill!
Reminds me of years ago when I had a Ford Granada with 2 Electronic Ignition modules attached and ready to switch from 1 to the other, depending on which one was working at the time.
Anyway, I will be installing a spare pump like you for my trip to Canada this Summer.
Thanks!
I had IM make me up a set of rain gutters as I figure that may help a bit in rainy weather...we'll see. IM shipped them out to me over the weekend so I'll have them installed for the trip.

What else....

Got a Pertronix kit to replace the points...figured that would be more reliable? And a rev limiter rotor for the S engine taking the limit from 6,500 for the T engine to 7,100 or 7,200.

Got the Fuch rims back from the machine shop...they took 1/4" off the back side so they should fit now. Took one rim and sanded it down then polished the lip and I'll powder coat the rest gloss black. The old center caps I media blasted then powder coated black and I'll mount some cloisone 356 crests in the center of the caps. Should look nice. I know, not really related to the trip but I've found that if your car looks nice it seems to run better. Anyone know why?

Dusty sent me some cool leather luggage straps and I got a period piece of luggage off Ebay and about 80 or so of those water transfer travel decals. (Anyone want any? There's about 36 or so states represented and a bunch of others..but none from Europe)

Going to replace the electric horns with an air horn set up...if they can't see me at least maybe they'll hear me.

Fabricated an alum heat shield to insulate the 911 sports exhaust I installed last year as its pretty close to the body work. Also got an insulated pad on top of the alum between it and the muffler as added insurance.

Replaced the old style IM top latches with repro 356 units...looks a lot more finished as the old latches looked like they belonged on an old set of luggage.

Installed one power window kit in one door...surprisingly easy. Waiting for the window crank operated switches to arrive before I continnue with the other. All in all am happier with power windows as the new door panels I made last year from my 912 panels were interfering with the full operation of the window cranks.

Got a Porsche 915 factory short shifter and instead of going with the WEVO kit I got a Seine Systems kit and therefore converted the 915 shifter to a fully gated 901 pattern. Its pretty cool and the shifts are now very positive but the shifter housing is a lot bigger so now I'm having to modify the center tunnel cover to fit.

Still lots of project to go....

Mike, I used to love to watch Red Green and the Handyman's Corner. The things Red could do with trash laying around the place and the motto, "If the women don't find you handsome, they can at least find you handy" (or some such thing..)

Its now been replaced in the time old time slot by Corner Gas which is just as funny IMHO. I knew an old guy from Sask whom I swear that Oscar character was taken from.

No road trip afterall....

Finally got all the parts including the KEP ring gear and stage 1 clutch to mate the 915 style flat flywheel to the 901 style trans. All the parts were there, so I thought. Engine and trans are out of the car so took trans apart to replace 1st gear synchro and dog teeth ... everything going smoothly although slow. Put back together the trans and WTF?!? The paper gasket does not fit. A $3 part from Pelican Parts...the wrong part. They have to order from Germany now...take a month.

So no road trip...probably just ship down in the fall. On the plus side going to Portugal next week and will visit with Luis in Messines...aparently he's having trouble with the box from his car too. We can trade stories over a Super Bock, or two, and some grilled sardines....
Already got lots of pics Lane...

My buddy wanted a pic of a topless babe on the beach so I'll share that one with you. Plus another of a very nice deserted beach up the coast. There are beaches galor there and most all even down to the smallest most remote has a cafe or bar.

This year I hope to get out kite surfing in the mouth of the river at Faro....a fellow I know will take us out in his boat. We're planning on meeting up with Luis and his wife Debbie for an evening out and Luis suggested going to a beach with his boat one Sunday. Then there's a big international Med Festival in the castle of an old town called Loule that we'll be taking in...crafts, music, theatre, food, etc. We usually go to the market in that towm. We just don't get that stuff up here...
