So I am going to tell you all the craziest speedster acquisition story ever.

October of 2005 - I decided to buy a VW bug and start a Porsche project. I knew that I was going to buy a replica Porsche, I was not sure which though. I really really really wanted a speedster, but it was out of my budget, and my knowledge of frame shortening was a little weak. So I decided to go with a Perry D Spyder. It was in my budget, and no frame shortening needed.

In November, I started restoring the frame. You can view the progress at www.spyderschronicles.com. I mean I spared no expense, and put a ton of time into this restoration. Just in case, the frame is for sale at

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=280210

I got the frame completed to a rolling chassis in December, and all I had to do was purchase the body.

In January I decided it was time. I took one last look on TheSamba.com. The night before, a guy in Florida posted a Speedster for sale. It was $1000 cheaper than the Perry D replica and it was a Speedster. Oh the joy. I emailed the guy to get a price on shipping. As it turned out, he was coming to Houston that weekend, and would deliver the car to my doorstep. His car came complete with the shortened frame and transmission. That's why my other frame is for sale.

So what are the Odds? A speedster for sale the night before I purchased the Perry D. And the guy just happened to be driving 700 miles to my hometown that weekend. IT IS FATE! FATE I SAY!

Good for you man! You'll never regret it. Would you believe that I always wanted a Speedster since the early to mid '80's when CMC existed and they had their cars on display at the airports? I already had a Karmann Ghia and enjoyed it very much; since the cars are so alike I always had a soft spot for 356's. I tinkered with VW's until 1988 when I sold a dune buggy I had built. Sadly my youngest brother had totaled my KG in '86 (believe me he hasn't and won't be touching nor driving my Speedster even though he'd love to take it out for a spin...). From '88 on I didn't own a VW.

Jump to 2003 and somehow (I can't even remember how or why) I started browsing the web for Speedster replicas, stumbled onto this site; learned enough to make an informed decision, ordered a new 2004 VS and the rest is history.
I too saw my 1st replica in an airport, back in early '95. I bought an old bug with a new motor for starters but then my wife developed cancer. So instead of the speedster project, I did slowly proceed with a "cheaper" VW convertible project.
11 years later I fell into a word of mouth deal to buy a primo 2005 VS with all of 1200 miles on it.
Bottom line: My wife is cured, I'm now retired and I am very happy with my new turn key speedy..... See my photos!
Todd, usually I'm a fatalist. Fate brought me and the Hoopty together, but your 700-mile spontaneous delivery does indeed sound like divine intervention.
Did'ja go to church at Christmas? Have good Karma from a past life? Wait long enough to pull the trigger that Fate stepped in?
Good deal, anyway.
